Loss of power (2000 Octavia Tdi 90)

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,

I'm very new to this, I run a very high mileage Octavia Tdi 90. Going to work today, I got to 75mph in 5th when the engine suddenly lost power. I pulled over, switched the engine off, waited 10 seconds and started it again, pulled away and it ran perfectly till I got over 75 mph again.

It'll run around town boosting nicely but as soon as I hit the magic 75 mph it loses power again, switching the engine off and restarting cures it every time

Could somebody please help me.

Many thanks in advance.

Dont drive over 70mph, its illegal anyway.lol

See if it happens at the same revs (not road speed) in the lower gears.

If so, then I think you've got an N75 or overboost fault (can't say which from these symptoms).

As quoted on the Honest John website:

Intermittent power loss on TDI 90s and 110s may be due to one of the following:- sticking turbo due to dirty oil; dirty or faulty mass airflow sensor; exhaust gas recircularion solenoid valve sticking open; wastegate valve actuator rod sticking; faulty throttle switches; faulty temperature sensor; loose or leaking brake servo pipe or turbo boost pipe from fuel pump to turbo; faulty ECU.

HTH

I didn't think the 90 had a VVT?

The TDI 90 doesn't have a VNT turbo as far as I was aware.

So not much chance of a sticky turbo causing overboost then!
