Rust!

Featured Replies

Rear nearside wheel arch has some classical felicia rust.

Nothing major just round the edge of wheel arch.

Whats the best way to deal with it? Previous owner has put small amounts of filler(or something similar) in but not a great job.

Only 65K on clock so will be on road for 2-3 years yet.

Seems I could sand away all the rust, apply primer and filler and then respray?

Confusin array of filler products/ rust solutions/hammerite etc available.

My concern is not wanting to make problem worse.Especially as student budget doesnt involve a trip to a bodyshop!!

[Apologies if this is a dumb question}

Best rust converter ive used is Bilt Hamber - Hydrate 80. About £13 for a 500mm pot, but it goes a long way

Finish with Hammerite is durable, and since beauty is in the eye of the beholder I don't mind using it, my Felly is a grand car anyway... but if vanity has got the hold of you, proper shade of blue in spray can might be preferable.

My wheel arches were rusty too

Halfrauds did a kit with a wire brush,, cleaner aand primer.

I scraped it off using the wire brush, then used the cleaner/eater to get the more stubborn bits.

Primed.

Then bought the spray.

Have to do my front arches and my right rear. The left panel got replaced courtesy of being sideswiped by a spanish trucker.

I wasn't happy they almost wrote the car off but when I got a new panel I was :D

I wire brushed, used rust converter, put a few layers of aluminium tape across and finished with 2 coats of black hammerite. Now got some "red wine" hammerite which is closer to the colour of the car and will go over it again when I get a chance. Reason I can't be bothered getting any paint mixed is I know the paint on my car has faded alot since new so won't match anyway.

More recently sprayed Waxoyl into the wheel arch area inside the car (behind those pull off access things in the boot.) It seems to me the reason they tend to rust is the metal there is very thin. If you have substantial rust there you'll certainly have some sort of hole when you get wire brushing the loose rust off.

Aluminium tape.....

I might have to use that one and Waxoyl too.

My sister is in the middle of hers - rotten right through - so I told her to sand it right down, get all the rust off - v important, and then put some primer on. Next fill in the hole (quite big) with filler, and then sand down - put plenty of filler on so you can sand it to the shape of the panel again.

Once the filler is sanded back, paint again with primer, and then once dry paint over with the correct colour.

Somebody posted an excellent guide to treating rust on here - only recently.
