Just too embarrassing - my brake lights aren't working can someone help pls

Featured Replies

Ok, I've been having probs cos my engine light came on (see thread: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/general-car-chat/just-about-sell-engine-lights-come-help/102080/#post1179887), but I have just realised after checking as many things as I know how that my BRAKES are NOT working.

Don't have owners manual and I admit I can't work out where the fuses are or what lights are what cos the brakes are dead.

Could someone please help me. I know I'm repeating a thread technically, but technically my problem is now different and I need urgent advice as obviously I can't drive without brake lights and the day I trade the car in is looming and I know the dealer will pick up that the engine light is on.

Cheers,

Karen

thanx Kaiserb uk

I forgot to mention - it relates to my SEAT Ibiza Cupra T!! Will it be the same thing?

Cheers.

Is that the brakes don't work or just the lights?

Have you tried new bulbs?

It is just the brake lights, the car is stopping so I assume the brakes are ok. I just read back through my post and it does look a little unclear. Sorry!

Anybody any (rough?) idea's how much a brake pedal switch for a 55plate Ibiza would be? I don't have access to a VAGCOM so will have to take it as assumed its that and chance on replacing it if it's not expensive. My logic is that if its not a single bulb it is either that brake pedal switch or possibly a fuse somewhere?

Also, if the car is just touching 20k surely it shouldn't have gone yet anyway?

Cheers again.

switches are quite cheap , and its not too time consumming a job , but it is a job that is best left to the experts as the switch has to be fitted in correctly or it gets fooked

Sorry to be a pain - would the 'expert' be best to be a dealer (ooooooh controvertial subject) or will just matey at the local garage know what to do if I produce one?!

Oh, and do you know how it can get 'fooked' - ie what to not do if I try myself!!!

ps. I live in the Fareham Hants area so if anyone within radar distance of this wants to carry out the work please PM me! (I hope I'm allowed to post that)

I bought a switch recently for about £6.

There is a knack to it and it may involve removing the lower dash panel to access it. Dig out the short skirt and low top before you go to buy one and simply enquire as to how it might be fitted, you never know you may get it done for free.

Bugger - I wish you hadn't posted that :P:rofl:

Did anyone give you a tip off? :D

 indeed Stu!

Looks like you've just volunteered yourself pal! :P

If you're around Fareham on Sat Karen, even I may be able to do it for you ;)

I have fitted that switch numerous times on my Octy.

First time, I took it apart and tried the repair - lasted for around 6 months.

When it went the first time I got no brake lights and no cruise control.

Second time it went...I got brake lights permanently on! I had to remove the fuse until I got a new switch.

They have redesigned it nowadays, the newer ones are green and do not have the ratchet setup that the old ones did (which is the part that can break IIRC if you fit it incorrectly).

As mentioned previously, only around £6 and cheaper from Skoda than VW (even tho it is a stamped VW part )

It looks like you are in safe hands now :P

original switch (black) was replaced with an uprated purple switch which has been replaced with latest green switch.

Thanks so much everyone for all your help - in particular VRStu who helped out with his VAG-COM and knowledge.

I have now replaced my brake light switch and the brake lights are now working in fine fettle.

For info - apparently there were no usual symptoms on the VAG-COM I had to go with a hunch in the end.

My advice on this subject would be not to try fixing the switch for the sake of less than a tenner its just not worth it imho.

A good result then Karen. Pleased for you.
