Coilover.......can you tell me where you got yours ?

Featured Replies

I've run both Bilstein PSS9's and FK Highsports which were half the price and on the road, I'd go with the FKs any day.

More expensive coilovers are often designed for the track so are perfect on slick surfaces but take them on the road and you end up skipping all over the shop.

The cheaper kits don't necessarily mean you need to compromise on ride quality or even quality of the components.

the fk's are the worst coilovers i have ever had i will leave it at that.

I agree, i had fks on my polo gti.........horrid.

Kw are the way forward, every single customer who has bought kw coilovers has come back and thanked me into talking them into them. They are really really really good

I've got to agree that the FK's are crap! Not for me. I ran these on my Corsa after the Avo's went in the bin when they leaked!

However I ran Vogtland coilovers (rebranded KW) on a Vectra, and they were far too firm for my liking - as were H&R coilovers I had on a Mk1 Golf.

The V-Maxx come with a 2 year warranty, and the guys in the States seem to rave about them, so got to be worth a try. I'm not buying them as they're cheap - the Golf will be brand new and costing £24K, but I don't want to ruin the ride, particularly when the 19s go on...

From my experience so far the KW's a brilliant firm but still comfortable they dont skip on the bump bits and yes the sump is close to the floor but have never had it hit the group when judt driving bout apart from speed bumps obviously.

Im well happy with them

and if the sump is to close to the floor, just adjust them,i will raise mine to maximum hieght, and take some photo's,just for laughs, when i get a bit of time:thumbup:

I didn't buy mine to constantly adjust - I had them set up and left them!

that isn't the only problem with them
that isn't the only problem with them

What are the other problems with them then?

Do you work for FK or something?

Sadly not.

I just don't think they're as bad as everyone's making out. Mine came with a warranty and TUV approval, so any issues would have been taken care of.

Plus they were dirt cheap, so a win-win situation.

My VAG specialist said that FK's were classed as "entry level" coilovers and if you weren't overly bothered about overrall ride quality then they would do the job.

Comments about vMaxx simply do a google search. They get rave reviews and dont fall into the "cheap alternatives" category but are still affordable. Its like all things in the car modification market in time the price starts to come down as demand improves. Mine get fitted on Saturday I will write a full review but if you give the guys at Northampton a ring who are the UK distributors they will talk you through the whole manufacturing process, the ride and build quality etc and genuinely know their stuff.

They have been compared once on cars to H&R set ups by several guys on various forums I frequent.

Am I the only one who thinks that a stiff ride on a VRS is excellent....! Lol! I do easily 100 miles a day on weekdays with a full track setup which I recently fitted from across the other side of the world, sure the car is bumpy but the grip it gives in the corners coupled with the Porsche brakes more than make up for it as far as enjoyment factor goes :D. I love it when she coks a rear wheel round corners lol!

On the other hand and to actually contribute something useful to this post... My mate has just bought some V-Maxx coilovers for his Mk4 Golf. He has had nothing but grief with them, one of the coilovers will NOT sit right in the uprights at all with it being slighty narrower in diameter compared with the other one and so keeps slipping down. It has already done a CV boot when it slipped down first time! He is now saving up again for some better suspension. This could just be an isolated incident but thought it might help....

you only have them on the stiffest setting so the arches don't foul those awesome wheels:P

lol :D :smrbow:.

They front dampers are actually on the softest setting now because of the recent wet weather but that is hardly soft lol and still no catching! Yey!

Strange, I've been reading the American Golf forums and they seem to talk about how good the fitment is. Has your mate spoken to V-Maxx about this yet, as I'd be surprised if they'd be happy with this?

I was just browsing for their contact details, and I went to v-maxx.co.uk - there was just a holding page there before, but now it's a proper website. If the 'teacher' works for V-Maxx then I'd definitely give them a call ;)

Well my other half Skodastream vRS is going in tonight to Midland VW to have the v-Maxx fitted tomorrow morning. If all goes well and the set up and ride is as good as the euopeans and yanks are saying they are I'll be ordering a set for my MK5.

We've done a lot of research into this before making a choosing the v-Maxx and spoken to a lot of people within the trade both manufactures and specialist garages and noone has had a bad thing to say about them.

I'm looking forward to seeing the results :)

I'd be interested if you do get a set for your Mk5, how you get on, as I'm looking to fit a set to mine when it arrives. Lots of good reports on the Mk4 but I guess the Mk5 kit must be quite new, as haven't ready anything about these.

HI mate, he spoke to the company he bought them from (Not V-Maxx directly) and they didn't seem particularly interested to be honest. I will ask him to go on the V-Maxx website and see what he can come up with, Cheers buddy...

I'm in the same boat as you, after some decent coilovers for decent money (less than £400).

V maxx looking promising, ive emailed my local stockist for details

SKODA Coilovers Sport Suspension Kit Fabia, Octavia on eBay, also Suspension Components, Performance Tuning Parts, Car Tuning Styling, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 04-Mar-08 14:34:38 GMT)

There is this set on ebay, which are galvanised steel struts, and comes with a 2 year warranty.

I emailed a fellow fabia vrs owner whose had them on a while, he likes them, says the ride is pretty harsh on country roads but great on motorway etc.

£260

TBH I think any cheap/mid range coilovers wound down quite a bit are going to give a harsher ride over standard
