Buying VAG-com

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, i have stumbled across this add

" Vw/Audi/seat/skoda diagnostic kit, including dealer level, Vagcom software and USB to 0BD2 cable"

What should i be looking for here, i.e to make sure its genuine ross-tech?

How would i know if it fits my car?

Does this include everything i would need from looking at the add or is there other thing i need to be asking.

oh yeah they want £90 for it which is why I'm a bit sceptical.

cheers

IMO, it's highly unlikely to be genuine.

How would I know if it is or isnt?? What do I need to look for?

A genuine Ross Tech cable looks like this:

The black and gold sticker will be one of these (as there are several different types of cable)

Cheers mate, I'll give em a ring and see what they say

Pictures are good if you are intimately familiar with the product. For example, I can say with 99.999% confidence that the interface in the pictures above is genuine. But I've also seen some damn good fakes. It's a bit like determining whether a watch that says "Rolex" on the dial is real. A factory representative can tell you instantly by looking at it, but you might not be able to, even if you've seen good pictures of a real one.

What I suggest you do instead: Ask them seller outright if it's genuine, whether he's got an invoice or receipt from us or one of our authorized resellers, and especially whether it works with the latest Beta version (currently 711.1).

Thanks Uwe, that is exactly what I was going to do is ask if was genuine.

Thanks again

To be absolutely sure, go to the About screen and check what Data Version you have. The latest Data Version for 704.1 is 20071016. You can see what the latest data version is by looking looking at the gray box towards the bottom of our Download Page.

Also, there is Beta 711.1 which has Data Version 20080108 (but there are some things about this data version that aren't compatible with software version 704).

Not ross-tech so load of **** really

Do Ross-Tech double up as a religion as well ?

In the end of the day it`s mostly parts and pieces. Not woodoo.

Depends what you're after. You posted two links to Chinese eBay junque. One is a cable that might work with 4-year old software maybe. The other is a code reader that might get you some fault codes but certainly is no substitute for a real scan tool. Try either of them on one of the latest cars and tell me how far you get with it.

Will do.

Looking for a diagnose system. But preferably one that would suit Toyota, Volvo, MB as well as VAG.

If "upscale" means lots of functionality and you're looking for coverage of multiple brands, then you're going to end up spending serious money. But multi-brand tools often do not work well (if at all) on the latest cars.
