superchargers

Featured Replies

Hi,

I kindof understand how a turbo works, but could someone explain how a supercharger works?

I seem to remember someone saying that F1 cars once used superchargers in tandem with turbo's... although I'm not sure this is true... would it have many, if any benfits?

Cheers,

Keoghan

Supercharger is like a turbo, but uses a motor to increase the intake pressure rather than using the force of the exhaust...

Rob.

Yep basically what Rob said.

The supercharge is power by the engine itself rather than the engines exhaust so there is no lag time waiting for the supercharger to spin up.

The Supercharger in tandem with a turbo is down to 1 thing, turbo lag. As the supercharger has no lag this would give the inital boost pressures for the engine at the start, the turbo would then cut in at a high RPM and take over from the supercharger.

it was lancia delta s4 rally cars that used both.. F1 cars have had turbos.. in 80's/ 90's but is 50 yrs since they had blowers (superchargers)

thanks :)

would using both cause massive stress on the engine? do you reckon the 1.8T would be up to it? and could it be squashed in?

Keoghan, have a read of this.

so far i can only find one for the 2.0l but the web has so many places... :)

Stay clear of the G lader compressor, not the most reliable of superchargers.

The superturbochargers work quite well in blow thru format where the supercharger is used to spin the turbo up at low rpm.

The supercharger we have running on our CooperS is a hybrid unit that uses the compressor side of a turbo which is joined to a gearbox to increase rpm which in turn is driven off the aux belt, works really well. The little Mini is running 280 bhp (160 std) normally and 355 bhp with the Nitrous which is a little silly.
