Hello to all,

I'm new, I need you advise.

I saw many turbo related problems, here is mine (hope you can solve it.)

I'm sorry that using metric system, I'm Hungarian.

Car: Skoda Octavia I. 1,9 TDI 110 hp, engine code: ASV, year 2004, mileage: 76000 kilometer (47000mi).

Works propelly. No noise, no smoke, normal fuel consumption,no control lights, full power, but engine oil leakes. Strongly: 1litre per 15000km. Two points where visible: at intercooler (at right front wheel-bumper ), and under engine cover, where there is the turbo charger and an air pipe going to the engine.

I use long life oil what mets VW specification.

Any idea?

I don't think 1 litre in 15000km is that bad. My Fabia vRS (more or less the same engine) uses about that much, and always has. I don't think it's anything to worry about! :thumbup:

Didn't think you could use longlife PD oil on the older 110tdi. I thought it's too thin ?

I maybe wrong though.

Thats why its using oil like crazy ur using pd spec oil in a normal bosch vp37 pumped engine,

15w40 iirc is the spec for taht engine and the pd oil is min 5w40 :confused:

That's not a bad oil consumption for a Skoda running long-life oil really. I've heard of people using more like 1l per 1_600km. :eek:

The difference between 5w40 and 15w40 is that the 5w40 oil is thinner when cold. I really don't think that's a factor unless you do lots of short runs where the engine doesn't get warmed up.

Also, there's no need to apologise about using metric units; most of us can work between Imperial and metric without any real difficulty.

I think he is saying he has oil leaks though isn't he?

Sounds like oil could be leaking out of the bearing housing into the compressor housing.

A small amount of oil will always leak out of the bearing housing, since it's impossible to totally seal it. But if your intercooler is full of oil, the leak is obviously worse than normal.

Possibly blow-by or just a tired turbo. Do you have the standard exhaust?

The oil leak may be due to excessive exaust back-pressure, or a pressurised oil system, possibly caused by a blocked engine breather.

I would inspect the engine breather lines.

And try and see just how much oil is in the intercooler.

Maybe I was not clear enought, I'm going into more detailes.

I bought as a second hand car, maintained in official Skoda garage, was used for short trips in Budapest (city usage).

I know official garages well, I would never use them for my own car. I prefer to do annual check-up and service by a friend and I.

Oil: Aral long life as recomended in manual

This oil meets VW506 standard. I gues this is what this engine needs.

I know its not pumpe duse TDI, but its newer than other 110 hp engines. It has flexible service period, based on long life oil technology.

Is this just bla-bla, commercial sh_t, and better to not use thinn oils?

YES IT LEAKS.

There are visible oil at intercooler surrondins and at the mantined bearing. Oil is comming out and goes down at back part of engine. At my parking lot, I can see small oil slicks.

But it is not that serious.

I would keep the vehicle for long term thats why I would preferably not put oil each month from the most expensive.

I've used Mobil 1 (only mentioned because it was 0W40 ) in an older tech engine than the 1.9TDi with no consumption issues. I honestly think the oil viscosity isn't your problem.

I'd check the breather hose you mark at the back of the engine for splits, and that it's fully seated.

Not sure why you'd be getting a drip out of the front wheel arch. The only engine related component there is the intercooler, which as an air to air model, doesn't need lubricating. Accordingly, I'd think that, if the oil is dripping from the intercooler, it must be coming originally from the intake side of the turbocharger, which must have a worn seal, and be dripping through a bad seal on the turbo to intercooler pipe. That seems unlikely though, so before worrying about that, I'd get the top cover off, and look carefully at the fuel lines, the power steering pump, and the sump gasket.
