HELP! Car running very rough

Featured Replies

HELP!

EML came on a couple of days ago but car ran fine. Then today just out of the blue the car started sounded very rough and shuddering on tickover.

It seems to me like car is only running on three cylinders but I dont even know how to remove the plug caps to check the plugs!!:(

I would also really appreciate if anyone can offer any help or suggestions as to the problem and maybe someone with a VAG COM reader in East Kent could read the error codes for me.

Cheers

Fuel injector cleaner?

Thxs Captain

Unlikely to help as car is LPG converted and same problem on gas or unleaded with sepereate injectors.

Cheers

Mine was like that, turned out to be the coil pack on it's way out, cost £31ish for the pack and about £70 labour

£70 labour!! It takes 5. mins to swap if youre going slow!!

Also, do not drive the car until the coilpack is swapped (might be a good idea to replace all 4) as the unburnt fuel going into the CAT wont help things!

I did wonder about the coilpack.

Can anyone confirm this is the likely problem before I spend out any dosh?

Had the same problem with mine a few years ago...luckily car was still under warranty, so nice AA man came out and diagnosed faulty coil (this happened twice in 18 months).

An easy test is to disconnect one coil at a time to see if this affects tickover - if it is a coil then when you disconnect the faulty one the tickover will not change...ie will stay running on 3 cylinders and not drop to 2 !!!! Suggest you use rubber handled pliers or wear rubber gloves to do it !!!

More than likely the CP's. I'm in North Kent with Vag-Com if interested, could confirm and fix.

I disconnected each Coil pack in turn and think it is No.3 thats the problem!

Do I really need to replace all four:confused:

It seems my original CPs had the letter N at the end so quite recent update but still a problem it seems:(

cheers

Well perhaps buy 2 and keep one spare.

Many thxs to all who offered help and advice!

Turned out to be coil pack on cylinder No.3. Now replaced at a cost of £19.15 +VAT from GSF.

Nice one, pocket the labour charge!

Nice to see a happy ending.

Exactly the same happened to me. Just about to stretch my Black 02 VRS's legs on its first proper motorway trip and the Orange Engine light came on and it started sounding like a bag o spanners. Panic.......

Then RAC man confirmed exactly what everyone said above. It was the 3rd coil for me too. Guy at work with almost identical car has replaced all 4 for the 'R' versions and no further issues. Mine feels a bit down on power and occasionally stuttering so may do others for good measure.

Good thread guys.
