Air Conditoner is throwing black sponge dust/particles

Featured Replies

Guys, I have a 2002 Octavia L&K 1.8 20V with 36,000 Kms. My airconditioner is throwing black sponge particles and black dust. Its look like there is some type of black sponge that have degrade inside the tubes thats goes to the vents and when I turn the AC, well you can imagine...............:(

Has any of you has experienced something similar? Were is located this black sponge in order to remove it or replace it.

THX,

Isaac

Has it got a carbon impregnated de-odourising filter instead of the standard paper pollen filter that is breaking up?

Other than that the quite often use black sponge on the dash vent open/close flaps where they join the main ducts. It could also be on the temperature and re-circulation flaps.

The aircon in one of our server rooms at work did the same a few months ago - strange.

Hello,

The pollen filter its almost new. I replace it at 35,000Kms. Car now have 36,000Kms

I can see thru the vents on the dash that the black sponge its ok on the open/close flaps.

Were are located the temperature and re-circulation flaps? Are they easy accesible? I know that if I remove the glove compartment, there is a part of the AC there.........Or do I need to remove completely the dash to fix this? Is there is a diagram that show thats parts?

What I want to do is to remove completely these degraded sponge because this thing is getting me crazy. The worst thing is that some time it throw big sponge parts and are all of my car and when I try to grab them with my fingers to throw it away is completely degrade in dust in my hands:( and sometimes is a sticky thing that stick to my fingers.

I really dont know when this thing is going to stop because I have vacum clean the car several times and this thing does not finish throwing dust...........And I am pretty sure when I am driving I am brething that dust too.:o

THX for you help,

Isaac

Well its look like the black sponge was part of the Floor Circulation Flap because is trowing small amout of air from the front dash vents but I can fill a lot of air on my feets:( Eaven that the control set up is set to trow only air thru the front vent.

Also my L&K as some air ducts under the front seats to vent air to the rear area and they also are trowing air.:(

Its look like I will have to cover all these floor outlets in order to force the air to flow only from the front dash vents:rolleyes:

It has happened to me, but i just waited until it stopped (like a month or 2).

The sponge is behind the dash in the foot air duct, in order to get there yo will have to take off the dashboard, glove box and the center console.

To me it was easier to wait until it stopped than taking apart half car.

Todo bien hasta ahora.

Things are fine around here.

Como dije antes, es mejor esperar hasta que deje de tirar pedazos de esponja a desarmar el tablero.
