Knock when braking in reverse

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have the following problem:

When I am driving in reverse and the steering wheel is turned to any direction when I press the brake pedal I hear loud mechanical knock. The most common situation when this happens is when I am parking. The car is 3 months old and it has the 1.9TDI engine with normal gearbox.

Another issue - when I lower the driver's window I hear loud creak. The sound changes with weather conditions and very often is missing at all.

Any help will be highly appreciated!

If it is a single knock then it could well be the pads moving in the carrier.

Yes, it is single and it loudness varies with how hard I hit the brake pedal. But it happens onlt when I'm turning the wheel. Very strange...

Could be a steering/suspension bush?

I'd go for the front pads knocking in the carrier and hence it only happening when turned.

If you are worried, however, it is worth getting it checked over by your dealer.

I got a 56 LNK 1.9 TDI Octavia. I had the same 2 weeks ago. Reversing and lightly steering, then braked and heard a very loud bang. My girlfriend and myself thought we hit something, so swithched off engine and had a look outside. I thought the bang was from behind, but am not too sure.

Still dont know what happened!

Very strange, dealer said not to wrry, but they didn't tell me what is the problem...

I did some tests and it happens even if not turning the steering wheel.

When driving in reverse I hear the sound only the first time when I press the brake. If I have already pressed it one the next times I don't hear anything.

If the problem is with the pads is it serious?

Any ideas how to get rid of the driver's window sound? Is it problem with the mechanism or just dirt is present where it shouldn't be?

Thanks!

Reverse then brake (so you hear noise) then move forward again & stop then reverse again & brake if you hear it again then it does sound like your brake pads, but could be just about anything including suspension pre-loading which may also point to why it is louder the harder you brake in reverse (shocks pre-load more)? Is it a particular side of the car? If so you could also try & check this theory by simply grabbing the wheel arch & lifting the car slighlty & see if you can replicate the noise. Either way probably a good idea to get them checked out, good luck.

I did the test - when driving in reverse I hear the sound only the first time when braking. If I continue to drive and press again - no sound. Turning wheel position does not matter. No sound when moving the wheel arch.

I'll go again to the dealer, hope this time they will pay more attention...

Might be worth asking them to put a shim on the back of the pad, or some copper grease to reduce the movement.
