Felicia 1.3 Gearbox noise

Featured Replies

Hi all, im new here so if this has been covered before here then sorry...

Ive got a 99T Felicia 1.3 MPi, its in really nice condition, only done 55k from new and always been serviced on time. Ive got an odd noise from the gearbox, you can only hear it when the engine/box are hot, it sounds like a sort of deep, rumbling knock. Its not loud, and you cant hear it at all when the car is in gear or the clutch is down. Very hard to describe a sound but its a bit like a main bearing going in an engine, only coming from the gearbox?? Any one come across this before and should I worry? Ive been told Felicia gearboxs are weak is that true? The gearbox oil has been changed with the right stuff but this made no difference. Thanks - and nice forum you have here.

Could be the usual 5th gear nuts coming loose...take the end cover off and put two new ones on, jobs good un!

Or might need an oil change.....

:)Didn't realise that was a common problem on these, seen it loads on Peugeots. I've learnt something today.

Thanks guys - will give it a try. Will prob do it myself next weekend. Had a look underneath just now - the whole end of the gearbox comes off? Looks like the gearbox mount has to come off first, so support engine, remove mount, drain gearbox and pop cover off then tighten nut? Simple as that? Is there anything behind the cover that will fall out or is the cover just a support for the end bearings? Cheers - Matt.

If you could - brilliant!

Modern Haynes - useful reference for the bits it covers; choklit teapot for the rest of the car!
