Squeaking from front n/s since brake upgrade

Featured Replies

Hi. Just upgraded my discs and pads all round on the Octy VRS MK1. I now seem to have a squeaking noise coming from the rear nearside wheel? I had a similar noise a little while back which was down to a piece of the zorst in the centre that needing a bit of a welding. Although this sounds the same, I am guessing it is not. The sound seems worse when turning left. Also, it seems to happen with the suspension. When moving off slowly with the passenger window open, I can hear the starts of the squeaking.

Any ideas? It sounds like a budgie !!

Cheers

There's a lot of things it could be.

The easiest to check are the wheel bearing, outer CV boot for tears, and pad backplate lubrication.

Then we're into things like getting a dial gauge to check disc runout.

Just went for a spin with the wife hanging out of the passenger window (I held onto her knickers!). She said the squeaking is definitely coming from the rear nearside, and NOT the front. Much worse when turning left. I did all the stuff, copper grease, etc. I will struggle to jack it up and look at it until the weekend now. Any more ideas? Safe to drive (local commute only)?

Cheers

Wheel bearing still applies; safe to drive unless the bearing collapses, when it will become undrivable.

I disagree as if the bearing siezes you can spin.

I'd be getting the rear bearings replaced if they are going.

I've never known one sieze; what I've seen happen is the roller cage break up, at which point the car's still controllable but going nowhere.

I saw the result of one seize (albeit on a front wheel) on a renault 5 about 200-300 yards ahead of me. The car spun and stopped and the front wheel had obviously locked and torn off and was hanging there barely attached. I gave the police my details when they turned up but was told it had been put down to a failing wheel bearing seizing and that they wouldn't be taking it any further.

Sorted now. Took me 45 minutes this morning. I had bent one of the small springy shims that sits on the bottom of the caliper and is next to the edge of the pad. I think it must act as a guide to stop the metal edge of the pad wearing into the caliper body. Anyway, it was bent, and the corner of it was rubbing up against the disc. Although there was a very very slight groove in the disc, the clip came off worse, and it just rounded the corner off. I straightened it out and refitted everything. Sounds quiet as a mouse now
