1.3 MPI Petrol 1997 - Does it have a timing chain/belt?

Featured Replies

I've rang around garages asking to get a timing chain/belt fitted to my other halfs Felicia 1.3 MPI petrol 1997 R reg GLi and for some reason some garages are quoting for a fitting but others are saying to me that they dont have any cos its a rocker type engine.

Which one do I have? If I have a chain/belt where can I get it on the cheap, fitting parts etc, in the Yorkshire area?

It is a timing CHAIN, so there is very little fear of it breaking. You will only need to replace it if it is really rattling and annoying, they go on forever even when rattling.

Yeah just to echo what Bobob says.

Defo a chain, and no need to change unless you get really annoyed with the rattle.

its got a chain AND push rods.

The chain drives the cam which is in the bottom of the engine and the pushrods then take that up to the rockers at the top of the engine!

As others, but annoyed by the who said "it doesn't have a timing belt because it's a 'rocker engine' (whatever that means)".

There is no reason why a cambelt could not be fitted to a pushrod overhead valve engine like a 135 or 136. In fact cambelts were fitted to some of these types of engine (not necessarily Skoda) back in the day, or that an overhead camshaft engine should not have rocker arms and/or a cam chain drive!

So basically the garages who said I didn't have a chain don't know what they are talking about? or they couldnt be bothered doing the work!? Ah well! Thanks for the replys!

No. You do have a timing chain, but anyone who bases whether you have a chain or a belt on whether or not the engine has rockers doesn't know what they're talking about, because the 2 design issues are completely separate.
