knock knock????

Featured Replies

ok, im getting a knock noise when pulling away on hills or at an angle, then the same when i brake really hard.

its a single knock as if something is shifting position and you can feel it through the bulk head. and ideas?

Mount on top of gearbox, or bottom wishbone bush

oh! me too. - interested to hear developments - I assumed it would be some kind of mount - wishbone bush suggestion is a little worrying tho. Mine is probably further gone than Pinkskud's, it does it without any particular angle, at low speed stop-start type g-forces.

ok, cool

dont think its the wishbones cuz there new.

it only happens when your pulling away hard, or there are a few bodies in the car.

how would i go about checking the gearbox mount?

Put handbrake on , and open bonnet, get someone to start the car, and put it in gear and slowly rais clutch until it bites and watch the mounting for exess movement or noise

you mite have to do it in 1st and reverse to see it . If it isnt that you mite be able to see or hear where it is

Dont do it near a wall as you mite get crushed if hand brake is not too good

Blimey - put the footbrake on too! Hard! And ideally use 5th gear, which will further reduce the chance of the car running over your foot or worse while you're staring in there. Personally I'd just take the mount off and examine it.

Dont do it in 5th as you wont get the required torque to move the mount

also check shocks

I have a similar problem on my civic, and i am informed by the garage that it is the inside of the shock moving inside the shock body

I have a knocking coming from mine just after the clutch was changed.

My mechanic will be looking at again soon. Think it might be the engine mount.

Oddly it only happens sometimes usually during gear changes or ir the car hits a sharpish bump.

or sometimes not at all.

We sell a shed load of the Gearbox mounts, so id say its that, unless its the other common seller, the Shockers....(Complete unit & bearings....)

Quite right. Why on earth did I suggest that? I wasn't even drunk. Sorry!

:)I've had this on several older cars and found that the noise you describe is from worn door hinge pins...as the bodyshell flexes the door moves and the pin/hinge knocks. Sounds far fetched I know, but it's true! Try it with the door open and again with it closed.
