Rear Wiper problems.

Featured Replies

Whilst coming home the other day in the rain, i noticed my rear wiper started to come on itself, even when the wiper stalk wasn't switched onto the rear.

Even with the front wipers off, it would sweep the back window.

Sometimes it would do one wipe, wait 10 seconds, do another, other times it would wait 3-4 seconds.

Any thoughts ?

Faulty stalk ?

That or a live short in the boot lid powering the motor.

Never thought of that, but it tends only to happen when the front wipers have been in use, which leads me to thinking more the switch/stalk itself.

Although, it doesnt happen everytime. :(

I think you're probably right, but I tend to work from free to most expensive fix as well as most to least likely. So a freebie gets checked before an expensive but likely.

Good way of thinking ! :D

Oh, i'll whip the rear plastic cover off at the weekend and check for any loose connections around the motor etc..

Thanks for your help as usual Ken. :)

good luck... getting the boot trim back on is not easy. An extra pair of hands certainly makes life easier.

:iagree: - even if it's just someone taking some of the weight for you.

Well it's hanging on with just 3 clips at the moment...so might not be going back on till i've bought more ! :D

Did you fix it? Mine has been doing the exact same thing. My rear washer hose had come off and soaked everything so I thought I had a short. Now its dried out the rear wiper still switches on by itself or when I've activated the front wipers. I'm wondering if there is a relay somewhere that is on its way out. Any ideas?

Exact same thing with my 2001 Octavia, have pulled the fuse temporarily. Come on lads get it sorted and post the answer !!. I had a similiar thing with the front wipers about two years ago-same car, but it went away after two days never to return, because of this I am inclined to think the switch may be the culprit.

I no longer have the car, so not sure if it's happened again.

Happened on my Octy MkI as well. Went to the dealer several times under warranty.

In the end the dealer reckoned it was the rear windscreen washer leaking water into the motor and causing a short.

It seemed to stop after the final trrip to the dealer, although I got rid of it shortly after so I don't know if it was permanently cured.

Ive been checking this out, i noticed that the rear washer wasnt working, so took the boot to bits and found the pipe had come loose in the boot and part of the wiring loom was under-water. ive fixed it and cleaned it all up a bit so will see how that goes.

Hmm...i need to do the same for the Fabia, as the washer doesnt work either.

Intrestingly enough, Jabba replaced that pipe you're talking about the week before i picked up the car

If the rear washer doesnt work, it will have come loose in the engine bay.. you will probably need to remove the airbox to get at it as its f**king fiddly to do
