Homemade Cruise-Control?

Featured Replies

Can it be done and how ?

Im thinking a second throttle cable through the bulkhead and controled by hand from inside the car on some kind of ratchet system ? :confused: Needs to have a quick release for avoiding death .. and be removable for MOT !

Any ideas !?

(its a 1.3 and i want to keep it going at 80mph)

Sound lethal to me :eek:

Lethal, yes.

Sounds a bit like motability controls to me.

Are you avin a laff :confused:

Some of the older Army landrovers have exactly what you're thinking of, basically a Second throttle cable on a choke type puller, just with lots of notches for adjustment.

Officially it's there to stop the battery going flat when it's parked & the high power radios in the back are being used.

It has however been know to be used for a primative cruise control ;)

Couple of points to note (aside from the safety issues!) - It's rubbish on hills (up or down) and it takes about 5 miles of completly flat road to get it set right, by which time you've come to a hill and ur either slowing down or speeding up rapidly and you have to knock it off!

So really unless you are planning to do alot of driving in Holland i wouldn't bother.

Ah ok. I see.

Seeing as I have NO desire to visit holland, is there a more legitimate solution?

... Some kind of aftermarket kit ?

I think in vehicles that have cruise control it's integrated into the car's electronics. Easiest way is to buy a car with cruise control, or possibly to buy one that was available with cruise control if that can be modified to have cruise control.

Why complicate matters?

No, a cruise control that just fixes the throttle position will only sort-of work on a diesel, and only sort-of there - on a petrol it's pretty much completely hopeless. You need a proper feedback system and while it could be done it would need:

1 An electronic speed sensor on the wheels or driveshafts, or (given most cruise controls are disabled by changing gear) the flywheel;

2 An electrical-to-mechanical transducer of some sort (stepper motor or something similar) to operate the throttle;

3 A microprocessor;

4 Quite a lot of thought.

I could build one, but the thought of doing it isn't very attractive - it would probably be a week's work and I'm reasonably good at both electronics and mechanics!

If cruise control is fitted , legislation says it has to be deactivated when the brakes are pressed

All manufacturer fitted cruise controls I know are in automatic cars. I have seen on reto-fitted to a manual car in Oz. I don't know where the guy got it, as it was a professional job, but looked **** bolted onto the side of the carburettor. He also needed a pickup on the tail-shaft(rear wheel drive) and switches on the clutch and brakes.

I wouldn't recommend making your own cruise control as there are too many things that could go wrong, and you need it all to be fail safe. (ie fails in a safe state, not just off)

IIRC the renault fuago turbo was the first production manual car to have cc

Mate of mine had a Ford Granada diesel, manual, with CC.

All new Skoda's have the option of cruise control on manual and auto models. (some lower trim spec may deny the option, but this is just to make you buy the next model up, there is no physical reason why it wont work)

I have it on mine, if the the vehicle was ever sold with cruise control option available in loom/ecu thenit can be retrofitted. A cery large number of MK4 Golf based vehicles gave been converted after-market (ie Golf, Audi TT, Octy I etc)

The CC disables on braking, clutch use or moving gear lever (obviously it resets on turning the engine off and also on switch off by button). The throttle will not disable CC as it allows you to accelerate, then naturally slow back to preset cruise speed.

and for running your welding set, or silly sized table saw at stupidly high AMP's or RPM. off the PTO

Anything can be done:

cruise control

if one finds it worth the labour
