How would I know if my car had had a remap?

Featured Replies

I bought the car via an independent dealer with 26k on the clock and in tip-top order last May, and it's always felt a bit quicker than a moderately large 180bhp car ought to. I am contemplating getting a remap (mainly for efficiency and a tad more grunt) but before I do I want to be sure that I don't already have one.

Documentation doesn't show any receipts or notes for a remap, but then an aftermarket mod like a remap might have hurt the resale value (depending on who did it) so perhaps the documentation was simply 'lost'.

Most likely it hasn't had one - but any way to find out?

Easiest way is to go and drive another vRS and see if it feels the same. Alternatively you could put it on a rolling road (although you'd have to trust its accuracy!). Or you could find someone local with VAG-COM who could see what boost, etc settings you are running.

Find a quiet road and do an accurate 0-60 test , or take a trip to the local rolling road and get them to measure the power output.

The latter will cost you , but if it saves you the cost of an unneeded remap.....

If you go to an honest tuner for the remap he would definitely tell you weather your motor has already been remapped ;)

Does anyone know of any 'honest tuners' in central Scotland who they can vouch for?

star performance in Glenrothes

bedrock VW do jabba maps IIRC

drivers in Glasgow do REVO

there is also an Angel Tuning rep @ Diamind Tints

Star Performance, eh? I'm going to be up that way next week so I could pop in and see what they say.

Where about in Edinburgh are you ?

Do you have a boost guage to measure with, then you'd know.

Is it a Mk1 or 2 ?

I'm not - I'm over in Fife, despite the handle!

id find anopther for sale at a dealer and take it for a test drive to see.

only way i think you may be able to tell is how low you instant mpg goes mine wouldnt go below 8 before remap now it drops to 5 at times.

I'll probably be over in fife at the weekend. Whereabouts are you? Could perhaps meet up and see how they compare if you wanted?

Really? Hm, my Mk1 will hold <6mpg all the way through 2nd and into 3rd on full-chat acceleration, bought supposedly stock from a Skoda dealer*. The previous owner was Bentley in Crewe and the turbo whistle was always quite obvious (which I read a long time ago is an indicator), so I did wonder.

* Well, it would, something's wrong at the moment, loud rattley-chattering which fades when the turbo spools, so I think the DV is gone. I've not been that bothered because I hardly drive it any more.

Probably the cheapest way would be to ring the previous owner.........

Or is that too obvious?

Find someone with Vag-com and they can log the boost for you ;)
