Anyone got Mintex Extreme Pads?

Featured Replies

I've just fitted these all round with new standard vented discs-not grooved or drilled. Everything seems to work ok, but during the running in I noticed that they make a whirring sound when braking. Just wondered if anythings wrong or if they all do that. The old pads were standard Mintex and they made no noise. Any ideas? I noticed my mates S3 does something similar but its got grooved discs which I thought was where the noise came from, perhaps not though:confused:

I fitted Mintex Extremes all round plus grooved discs a few weeks back. Mine also make a whirring noise when braking, but I put that down the to the discs. IMA, I was expecting a massive difference with the grooved discs and Mintex Extremes. They are better, but not that much. I am guessing that the same difference would be felt if I had replaced for new OEM? Maybe my brakes were just great anyway (albeit quite worn).

I'm not sure if they are better yet as only did them saturday pm! Its just the odd whirring on normal discs which is bothering me. The car stopped ok before on normal pads, it just juddered - hence the change on the front. The rears were totally worn out - got my moneys worth!

might have burned some pad material onto the disc. go out and give them some abuse but do not stop still with the brakes on and this may help as it should burn off some of the pad material.

obviously do this safely and legally!

I followed Mintex's on running in to the letter so hopefully they should be ok. Just drove home and they work ok just this new noise

I fitted EBC Redstuff Ceramics onto OEM 312mm discs (MK II) and hear no whiring noise when slowing.

I would only expect that from grooves. The pad or something else isn't obscuring the vents between the two parts of the discs is it?

Not sure what you mean? How can the pad cover the vents in the disc? The noise is only there under braking - nothing otherwise:confused:

Well I'm thinking if the calliper isn't quite lined up, when you push the brakes on maybe it is disturbing the air flow through the vents making that noise.

I think I'd probably have them off, make sure the discs are on the right way (if they are claimed to be directional) and that the callipers/pads are all lined up.

Only other thing I guess if that you didn't put on new tyres or perhaps have existing directional ones put on the wrong wheels after the brakes came off?

Sorry I can't be more help.

The discs are just standard 312mm Mintex so not directional, tyres are directional but they are not new and I'm pretty sure I didn't swap them (I'll look in the morning) and the noise is only on braking, nothing otherwise. The only difference between what was on before and the new stuff is the Extreme pads. I did the rears first and they made no noise, but then they are solid discs. I'm a bit baffled:confused:

Did you replace the discs at the same time? I wondered as you mentioned juddering pre-pad change whether the discs are warped and it's this which is making the whirring?

Replaced all the discs and pads, rears first fronts a week later. No juddering anymore (yet at least- it didn't start straight away last time), just "whirring sort of hum"

  • 2 weeks later...

Just an update - the whirring noise is largely gone, brakes work fine. So I have no idea what it was!
