Drove a Golf GTi today (1.8T 150HP) and..

..couldn't help comparing it to my Octy.

It's one of our company cars, and has done 23k miles (same as my car).

Things I noticed...

The motor sounds exactly like mine when ticking over. ie it ticks.

The steering, clutch and gearchange are all lighter on the Golf.

The golf has much more soundproofing, and the ICE sounds smoother as a result (less boxy), but is it really a better system? Probably not.

I drove this exact Golf a while ago (before getting the RS) and thought it felt quite fast, but now i'm used to mine, the Golf felt gutless. The turbo does virtually nothing!!

Do I prefer the Octy? Absolutely! Its MUCH faster, and feels like a stripped out racer compared to the Golf (which I like). It also looks better (IMO) and is more practical. And as for the price...... :D

My conclusion? Well, the Golf 'feels' like its a higher quality car than the Skoda because the illusion of solidity and quality has been engineered in, when in reality, it's exactly the same.

I wonder if in actual fact, it was engineered out of the Skoda? Mmm.

I love the inferiority complex MKIV GTI drivers have :D Every bloody time one of them sees the badge they try it on it's funny. A guy at work has spent almost

Audio is slightly better due to the Golf having 2 sets of 6.5inch components in it. Its not bad as a standard setup, better than the Octy.

I have to say that I hated my 1.9TDI 90bhp Mk4 Golf company car. Crappy seats (they weren't the GTI ones), 'small' boot compared with my Focus. Poor headlamps. Just overall I didn't like it.

I'd certainly never go back to a Golf (well maybe a Mk1 or nice Mk2 supercharger!!), I love my Focus, and I love my Octy vRS even more.

Don't Golf owners hate being outdone by us vRS owners !!
