Problem Selecting 5th gear

Featured Replies

hi has any1 had a problem selecting 5th gear?

up to last night i didnt have a problem but i was driving back along A64 all ok until i stopped for something to eat.. set off again after 1/2hr and when i re-joiined the carriageway i couldnt select 5th no matter how many times i tried.. i stopped again bout 500 yds along and still no go.. so i ended up travelling along at 60mph in 4th till i came off the M62 went down the gears to 1st at the roundabout and back up into 5th!!! odd

but this morning it wont go into 5th again... its like something is stopping it from shifting across

any ideas??

Check to seeif anything is fowling the selector cables.

i once had the problem in my old vectra that i could not select 1st 3rd or 5th when on a dual carriageway bu didnt want to stop as would never have got going again so carried on and went over speed bump and all of a sudden i had all gears again. i had look in engine bay and theres the perfect spot for something to sit and block the gear linkage onto the gear box.

There is a known fault with a worn dog bone bush which causes these symptoms. I get the same now and again, normally happens when accelerating and trying to select 3rd or 5th - just won't have it, normally braking and shifting down and then back into 5th solves it. Do a search, quite a few threads cover this problem and whats involved in resolving it :) (normally just buying a new OE or Poly bush is the answer!)
