Clutch failure extends holiday.

Been up in Edinburgh for a few days holiday. Lovely.

Come tuesday and I'm all packed and ready to go.

Push the clutch down to start and CRACK. Pieces of metal and plastic fall into the footwell and the clutch pedal is stuck to the floor.

AA take the car to an Edinburgh dealer and I explain to my boss why I won't be at work the next day.

Next day I'm told that the clutch master cylinder and clutch pedal need replaced and the parts will arrive the next day.

Cue another phone call to the boss.

Thursday, I call for a status update. Parts not arrived. Phone call to boss again. :mad:

Friday get car and 166 pound bill.

Now the car had I 50k mile service 2 weeks before hand. Should the garage that performed the service have noticed the clutch problem?

Do bits of pedal normally snap in a master cylinder failure?

I've lost a chunk of faith in my car now. :(

Not sure about the Octy, but I know from seatcupra.net, that a few of the guys on thier have had the clutch pedal snap on the Leon but never heard of the master cylinder have to be replaced too. I assume both cars use the same pedal.

Exactly the same happened on a year 2000 VW Polo my wife had. It certainly did not involve the master cylinder, only the clutch pedal bearing. Bits of plastic everywhere. It happened entering a busy motorway when changing from 4th to 5th. The resulting escape to the hard shoulder was interesting to say the least, as was the subsequent rescue tow! The total cost was about

i'd say the garage that did the service should have either noted that the pedal was worn or seen that there was a possible problem there.

I'll probably be sending a letter to the servicing dealer in Nottingham asking how much work my (admittedly 78 pound) service and test-drive actually involved.

I now wonder if the dealer in Edinburgh didn't get a bit carried away then. If the pedal itself was the only broken part then it should have been quite cheap. Add-in the cost of a master cylinder (and a lot more labour) and the price quadruples. I think they assumed that the cylinder caused the pedal to be stiff and that I broke the pedal in an attempt to push against it.

If your clutch pedal was sticking before the failure, this would point to the clutch master cylinder being one of the faulty ones which some members - me included - have had replaced by a modified one. Food for thought........

Was there any clue to it going?

I've started to notice that when pulling away at certain revs theres a loud click noise that can be hear by all in the car. It seems to come from the pedalbox area, just as your taking your foot off the clutch.

It's only intermittant though and doesn't do it when the car is stationary :confused:

I've had same problem with my clutch pedle on a couple of occasions over the winter, I put it down to ice or something, but its interesting to note there is a problem

Get it sorted under warranty while you can.
