anyone on here purchased vag com and used it on a lappy with no serial port if so what does one have to do/ purchase?

I believe you can get PCMCIA cards that have serial ports on them - they might work better if they're a "proper" hardware implementation of a port, rather than a simple serial <--> USB convertor...

A USB to serial adaptor will only cost about a tenner off ebay.

Give it a go and if its not up to the job then just flog it on

or buy an old laptop with a serial port???

From what I understand VAG COM isnt to great running on a USB due to limitations in data transfer.

Close, I had to hunt for a new laptop with a serial port, as I wanted to use it for more than vagcom. There are a lot of 2nd hand shops about K, all you really need is a laptop with a serial port and window 95 or newer (i think) and you are done. Most will be IBM thinkpads

i have a 2 mnth old laptop thanks i don't want another one i have a vagcom cable all i want to do is plug it in and play. i also have a 1552 at my disposal 24/7 but what i was trying to do was seperate my works with "site business" at this rate it would have been cheaper to buy myself a "proper tool" (1552).

The only problem with 1552 is even with the later cards it still wont interogate alot of newer models and doesnt have full can bus diagnostics.

And as no one could afford VAS 5051/52 even if VAG sold it (only leased to dealers) VAG COM is really the only option.
