Noise from rear near side!

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have had a noise coming from the rear near side for some months now and it was really starting to bug me. The car is an 06 VRS and is my second one. No problems with the previous one. It would occur from cold and was really noticable going over speed bumps slowly and pulling away from my drive going down the curb. It was clunk type of noise and I wondered if it was noisy failing bush. It would go away after a long run so I was not confident I would be able to recreate it for the dealer as they are a long run away. I decided to jack it up and see if I could see anything loose. First attempt some months ago found nothing , but it had been warm and dry for a while. Tried again today and had my son jack while I looked under by exhaust. Jacking caused the noise to occur and I was able to locate the source of the noise. It was the coil spring rubbing hard against the rear of the lower strut and by comparing with the other side, you could see the spring was not correctly seated on the lower strut. After compressing the spring, I was able to get it correctly seated and now the spring is well clear of the rear of the strut and looks the same as the other side. I suspect it had been like that since delivery as I had not done anything that I feel would have caused it. Those springs are strong and surely would not jump under normal hard driving? Thought this might be of interest to others with unexplained rear noise.

Regards,

Charlie.

Thanks for this useful post mate, might jack the car up to find my wee noise.
