vRS Clutch Biting Point

Featured Replies

Just wondering...how are people's clutches on their vRS'?

Mine only begins to bite near the end of travel so its quite high. It's always been like this and I am used to it but for moving forward in slow traffic it's becoming a nuisance.

Is this something that could be adjusted by my dealer?

Not sure if it can be adjusted but the height difference between the pedals is something that bugs me.

Hmm the clutch is ok but I had a Leon before and they're notorious (as with the rest of the spanish leg of VAG) for having wierd clutches... maybe its spread to the Skodas now :)

No adjustment, purely hydraulic.

im dissapointed the clutch in my vrs isnt the same as my dads 56 plate passat, its a pleasure to drive that car in heavy traffic, especially when its not my fuel :P

I found this too. There is an excess of travel from the floor (pedal fully depressed) until the bite point. I found it nigh on impossible to get a smooth gearchange. Also, to be able to push the pedal to the floor it meant that I then had the seat too far forward for everything else.  I also had the same problem on my fabia 1.4mpi.

Answer?

I worked how much excess free play there was, which was about an inch (25mm), and then secured a suitably sized block of wood to the back of the clutch pedal with cable ties and duck tape to reduce the amount of pedal travel. Now been in place for a year with no problems.

I now change gear smoothly everytime and am sitting comfortably. :D;)

Does that work?

Wouldn't it stop you from changing gear... or does the clutch automatically adjust?

Emphatically; YES.

As far as the clutch mechanism goes, there is no adjustment to happen (apart from the self adjustment to account for wear, I presume) as effectively all I am doing is depressing the clutch pedal by 3/4 of its travel on each gearchange, enough to disengage the clutch plates; as opposed to its full travel, where the final 1/4 is useless free play (now being blocked by the block of wood).

OK?
