Rough tickover

Featured Replies

I've had my vRS TFSI for about 2 weeks now and i've noticed when its been for a hard fast run you come to rest and tick over is rough, you can feel the engine keep pulsing although the revs dont increase, its almost like its mis firing, but its not. its quite hard to describe but you can feel it through out the car, you dont need your feet on the peddles

wondered if it was normal or not, take the revs up and it stops it for a while and then it comes back, but... if the car is driven gently it never happens, only when its had a bit of a thrash

Mine does it all the time mate. ;)

She sounds like a transit van at times when she starts up but the revs remain constant with a very audible ticking noise.

Having sat next to a couple at the lights though I think this is the norm :)

oh good :) sounds positively quiet compared to the focus tdci and mazda 6 td

I have to confess Ive never noticed this - id be inclined to say mine doesnt do it in fact. If I find it does (and Im pretty sure I would have noticed) I'll let you know.

Yep, mine does this too. Just every few seconds there is a slight vibration through the streering.....lets you know the engine is still running :)

I had the same on my old Corrado VR6 and that was fixed by changing the plugs (they we'nt even old) and it returned after a couple of thousand miles.

Not sure if its the same with the TFSI engine but I'm not arsed about it if it means I have to change plugs every 2K :)

Car goes like stink anyway so no worries

Just noticed since ive read your post mine does it to ,but not to often

How about this for a theory;

As the car is 'hot' after a run and as you have stopped there is no cooling ram air, so the underbonnet temperature will rise. This will have an effect on the air intake, with the air becoming hot and 'thin' which the ECU will then compensate for with adjustment to fuel injected; causing it to pulse.

Another point is that the FSI injection, being 'direct' into the cylinder, does make the engine sound and run a bit 'rough' on tickover, almost like a diesel; unlike traditional fuel injection (where the fuel is mixed with air before it goes into the cylinder) which is smooth.

Yep, fairly noticeable uneven idle after going for a blast - perfectly normal. :) You aslo get a nice popping from the exhaust too when you blip the throttle :P

I've had my Octavia vRS with the 2lt FSI engine for almost 18 months now and noticed this rough idling since 10,000 miles.

It became much worse on a trip to Heathrow (from Maidstone), and the car also started over-revving with the throttle sticking on occasion. It's been with the Maidstone Skoda dealership (Dutton Forshaw) for two months now. Apparently they've fixed the main issue (coils apparently) but it's still misfiring.

This is where the whole saga starts. The dealership have given up on fixing the issue (basically out of ideas) so Skoda Technical have stepped in to try as solve the problem remotely (which basically means 1 email a day followed by 30 minutes of analysis and then stop). Now entering the 8th week and no end in sight.

The last test performed was a leak test on the injectors themselves. Apparently quite common with the diesel engines, but not with petrol. The dealership actually had to buy the tool to perform this test (as usual Skoda technical ask them to do the test, but don't provide the equipment for it).

I'll keep you posted on what comes out of this... hopefully you're not hearing the result in another month!

Thanks for that Noblestone.

I do think you are suffering something much more severe than some of us others. My slightly uneven idle is merely a slight interruption on the smoothness of the engine that is barely detectable though the car itself, and certainly not on the rev counter etc. :)

Good luck getting yours sorted, and welcome to the forum

I noticed this same little thing tonight before reading this thread. I was sat out in my car reading my vag-com logs from my journey home like a total sado. Had the engine running, idling, hot after the run home and noticed the pulsing maybe every 8 - 10 seconds or so? Just a very slight blip felt through the car, not seen on the rev counter as noted above. I wonder what it is.

Interesting this happens on everything from a PD105 - 2.0FSI.

the hot air theory sounds spot on, makes me chuckle when ya pull up and can see the heat haze coming off the bonnet, never had that before :D
