Hi Rich,

This one sounds like something out if 'Ice Road truckers' to me.

That would seem to be most unusual. I had a friend who foolishly poured hot water on a frosted windshield and it cracked, and I found it amusing, because it was a Company vehicle.

I think that maybe your windshield has been under tension since it was first installed.

Very bad luck that, and I hope you get it sorted out by the insurance company OK.

Soviet:)

Read the title all wrong, thought you said widescreen, wondered why you had a telly outside :o.

Back OT did you have any stone chips in the screen? The only vehicles I have heard of this happening to previously where smarts on the rear screen.

no chips on or near it and you can see it goes from the corner of the screen under the trim across and up.

in sime ways its handy as the screen is quite scratched anyway.

Quick Update:

just got off phone with auto glass who cant fit a new windscreen till next week at the earliest as its a laminated screen so should be fine to drive,

i exajerated and said that the crack was in my line of site and they didnt seem to care.

awesome customer care there.

Autoglass wont be able to fit it any quicker, because they get the screens in from a supplier. At least autoglass use OEM glass from skoda, unlike some of the other windscreen companies who make their own.

Also you need to make sure you get the correct coloured glass, if you have a facelifted car (post 2001) then you want the grey tint and not the green.

yeah i made sure i didnt get the green one when i spoke to them.

i thought they offered 24hour servce?

i think 24 hour is for roadside.

Driving with the cracked screen will be fine. I've been through 3 in the past year. 2 were cracked due to a very small stone chip in the very bottom corner passenger sidel

Just make sure that when they fit it they pull it up tight to the top of the frame. The screen doesnt sit on the lower edge. If it is to low then the wiper arms can scrape the screen.

Screen no, 2 was due to the arms scratching.

Oh, and while they have the lower cover off it is the perfect time to check the air filter in there.

i changed the pollen filter the other day for 40k service. ill make sure they put it at top then. its only an hour isnt it untill you can drive it again?

Couple of hours for it to set I think.

They told me the minimum time to drive is an hour, but the longer you can leave it the better.

To check the screen is in the correct place just run the wipers once or twice. If it is scraping you will hear it. (assuming they dont use so much tape to hold it in place that the wipers doent run over it.)
