Why do diesel/petrol prices differ?

Featured Replies

Can anyone explain why there is now a difference of 10p/litre between diesel and petrol? The local garage is selling diesel at 116.9/litre and petrol at 106.9/litre.

Perhaps it's because diesel cars use less fuel than petrol so the producers have to increase their profits somehow .

Its to do with the refineries having more petrol making capacity then diesel. They havnt yet built enough equipment to refine enough diesel to meet demand.

Modern Low sulpher Diesel costs more to refine than petrol, so they charge more.

I think you also get less refined diesel of the 'barrel' compared to the amount of petrol.

Demand has a role in the price too.

Incorrect about the refining.

Derv is a waste product of creating petrol. Both of those are now required to be ultra low sulphur so both have to undergo the same process to remove the sulphur.

Add to that that V-Power etc require even more refining and processing that normal petrol and you do have to ask why that is cheaper than derv.

The only logical explanation I can see is the one above that basically the derv is a left over from making petrol, so there is now an excess of petrol and not enough derv. Until it comes to replacement time for the catalytic cracking tower, a company isn't going to throw millions away altering it, so we are stuck until then :(

On the continent, diesel is cheaper than petrol in many places. Work that one out.

Diesel used to be a lot cheaper in the UK, now its taxed more heavily than petrol. That and the fact that some garages seem to keep the cost of petrol down by increasing the price of diesel to keep the majority happy.

Hi

Derv was cheaper here in Croatia until recently, now Eurodiesel is more expensive than all products. Not in your league though, but pro rata to salary, its expensive at 80p+ lt, that has jumped from around 70p+ 3 months ago.
