Thumbsup for Homeplug

Featured Replies

Due to the nature of my home's construction (granite walls between 12 and 24 inches thick with breezeblock/stone facing extensions)) we have always had problems with maintaining a wireless connection around the house.

Well no longer ! I recently managed to purchase 3 (1 for the router plus 2 PC's)Solwise 85mps homeplugs from Ebay for £56 and they are superb, They work in all the plugs in the house, in the extension (running through a 2nd fusebox) and even attached at the end of an extension cable in the garden !(the latter purely for experimental reasons) Connection is so simple that even my wife can manage it.

So bye bye overly complex wi-fi and hello to true 'plug and play'

You can tell I'm impressed :D

You have secured it have you ???

Only half the street can jump on iirc

Whats a street ? ;) Fortunately I live in rural Devon so piggybacking is not an issue, but yes, it is secured

It would be 1/3rd as then all the people on the same phase as you could jump on.

I still prefer cat5, but I admit putting a hole in a 24" granite wall would take one hell of a drill bit.

Not convinced by power network stuff yet.

The security issues aside, I dont like the idea of my network card being wired into the mains. I've seen more than enough of surge damage to protected equipment!

Good old Dartmooor rock, eh? I bet your house is made with the rocks found up that big hill outside your house! :D

Anyone got pic or a link so I can see one of these? I'm interested as my house has thick walls?

Ben

I have been using homeplug AV (200mb) for quite some time now, no issues at all, streaming HD movies is a joy over it unlike WiFi,

I have mine plugged into a Belkin 6 port Surge protector, onto the mains and at the TV end it's out via a 10 gang surge protector, into an 8 port switch where it feeds my Zyxel media streamer, Xbox 360, Wii, Panasonic Hi-Fi.

I love the things to be honest and would recommend them to anyone.

Edit, Pic for Conshine

Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK

You need 2 mate, link in my previous post, they also do a 2 plug kit.

You can get the slower speed ones cheaper, but the AV standard handles everything I throw at it with ease

There seem to be 3 main maunfacturers,

Solwise, Devolo and Netgear plus some smaller companies. They come in 3 flavours 14Mbps (too slow for todays needs) 85Mbps and 200 Mbps

In all honesty unless shifting huge amounts of data around the 85Mbps ones should prove fine for most users, Good old PCWorld sell them but at hugely inflated markup (around £80 for the 85Mbps starter kit which is simply 2 plugs) As in my original post I got 3 for £56 off Ebay, but many of the online retailers now stock them.
