head

hi i have just noticed oil all around base of head all round the seal is this a sign of a blown head gasket or one that is about to go. i have checked the oil and there is no milky mess in there and there is none on cap my water level is not dropping and there is no milky mayo in there either. and also the exhaust smoke is clear no white smoke.

If it is mainly at the front it could be leaking oil from the cam cover at the front. It may be working it's way around the engine when the car is in motion. Only way to be certain is to clean/steam clean the oil off (ensuring electrical components are protected against any moisture) and wait for it to recurr. It could also be coming from the rocker cover down.

I would recommend cleaning oil up and replacing the rocker gasket and side cover (cam shaft cover) gasket. They are relatively easy to replace. For the rocker cover gasket, remove the two hoses on top, hopefully they will be the screwable hose clips and therefore easy to remove and put back. Undo two 10mm nuts on top, and remove the bits underneath and lift the cover off. There is a rubber seal in the bit of metal you have just removed. It will pull out and the new one will push in. Before replacing you may want to mop up the oil that tends to drip down.

Camshaft cover is 4 10mm nuts on the front of the engine. They may be hidden from view and they come off the same way the top nuts do although I found with mine a stud came out instead, and also that the cover itself was stuck to the engine (presume by the gasket) and needed some welly to get it off. Again pull out gasket and insert new one and put back together.

On the Favorit the rubber things around the nuts I mention can leak oil but the design is different somehow for the felicia and I do not know if these leak. But it could be woth replacing those.

To check if it is the headgasket a garage would test the compression of the cylinders using a thingy that fits in the spark plug hole.

It wouldn't be the first time I'd seen an oil weep caused by one or more loose cover bolts. Before I did anything else I'd check that I couldn't undo them with my fingers!
