Engine Problems!

Featured Replies

Dad was driving the car yesterday (4x4 turbo) and it stated spluttering/missing.

Today it sounds rough as hell and the engine management light is flashing. Only about 1/2 or 2/3 power. Sounds much worse than a miss fire. More like one of the cylinders isn't firing.

Any guesses? It had just been filled up with petrol from Sainsbury's... but problems started 15miles after that so I doubt it's dodgy fuel. It's done 50k and is due a service in 2k miles. No history of engine probs (apart from hesitation on cold starts).

And no, I'll not be giving prizes if it ends up being a failed coil pack....

Sounds like a coil pack has gone down to me.

Erm, you mean like a missfire then, i.e one of the cylinders isn't firing..lol

OK then, more like TWO of the cylinders aren't firing :)

2 coil packs....

If it is a coil pack (or packs) should I replace all four? Will my local (v.v.v good) garage be able to do it? Or do I have to throw money at a main dealer? The car has done 50k and according the the service history this is the first problem that car has had (it's a late 2001 car).

BTW, is it safe to drive the car the 1/2mile to the garage or should I get it towed?

I had this exact problem in my old ibiza cupra (20vt) and it was 2 of the coilpacks!

Best to replace all 4 i'd say.. You'd probably have to replace the other 2 in a few months or so now anyway

Ideally you shouldn't drive the car because the cat could suffer damage through overheating due to unburnt fuel getting into the exhaust.

Hi,

you can buy them from GFS(last I heard they were about the cheapest around) :) or the stealer(supprisingly not that expensive & you get 12 months warranty ) & fit them yourself. I did when 2 went down on my 4x4 last year, it's not that hard & yes probably best to replace all 4 at the same time.
