vRS TDi: First week

Featured Replies

Hi all,

just to sum up my first impressions and feelings after the first week of use, coming from a Megane 1.9dCi.

1) Handling is superb! Basically I can "almost" avoid braking on highway :D, even along my usual 300Km commuting.

2) I think that engine seems liking to be pushed hard. It's a pleasure to listen the growl out of exhaust. On the other way, sometimes I'd like more sound dampening, for engine noise.

3) Sound quality (stream) seems not the highest available, even if it needs break-in, too.

4) Interior are high quality, I definitely like it.

5) The boot is really gorgeous. After putting in 2 cartons of pampers :D, it was almost empty! And I like the small lateral cavities for emergency and for things like snowchains!

Mileage after about 1500Km is around 7.8-7.9 l/100km, by driving fast on highways and queueing up in Milan, so I'm satisfied. With my 1.9dCi, I had 7.3 l/100km and 50cv (bhp) less (not to mention torque) :D

Perhaps this morning I perceived a little noise, a vibration at around 1200 rpm, but I still have to check.

Bynow, I'm really satisfied:)

I'm proud to belong to this community :)

Nice little review that.

7.8l/100km is about 35mpg I think, so not bad for fast driving and city driving too. I'd expect that to go up by around 5mpg as the engine loosens up over the first 20k miles, normally notice a difference about the time the first service is done. :)

Good review that...I'm just completing my first week in my VRS having come from an Altea 1.9 TDi....Seriously impressed too having completed 1100kms...Fast and practical and I've averaged 39.9mpg (changed the measurement units in the Maxidot to MPG) over a 110 mile a day commute..

I remember once hearing Jeremy Clarkson describe Renault Scenic's/Seat Altea's and the like as a way of saying "I've completed my biological purpose on this earth and I'm now waiting to die"...I think the VRS is the ultimate family car and far from waiting to die it says "here's where the fun starts!!"...Like the old Mazda6 advert used to say "quick, start a family" :D

Thank you all,

any hint on break-in strategies? I admit I didn't babe her very much :), I tried to avoid too steady rpms and tried to vary rpms as much as possible (to my satisfaction, I must say :) )

Stefano

Yep, vary the revs, don't be scared of putting the engine under load, but avoid taking it to the red line for a few hundred miles... :)

Basically, just drive it normally. Babying a new engine is about the worst thing you can do ;)

It's a bit late to ask this now. The handbook suggests using progressively higher revs for the first 1500km - you have done that now; so just let rip! :D

Seriously, just don't let the engine labour.

You mention vibration around 1200rpm. This is quite common but usually with heavy throttle; best to use heavy/full throttle when over 1700-1800rpm; keep to light throttle under 1500rpm.

Fuel consumption should improve to 40mpg or better with time, unless you insist on going down the Autostrada at more than 140kph. :D when 35mpg is acceptable.

Ciao,

@ bahnstormer vrs: how can you stay under that speed :) ???

@ MidVRS: is it possible to read what Clarkson said about our Octy?

thanks for all suggestions!

Stefano

Nice to see another satisfied owner!

Got just over 2000 miles on mine now.

I recently had an 80 mile trip on M40/A34 with cruise on where permitting at a steady 75mph, and maxidot gave me an average reading of 48.4mpg. Great mpg IMHO.

Having come from a 3.0V6 petrol to an oil burning VRS, I can say it has took a bit of getting used to, but I am liking it more every time I drive it :D
