alternator blues...

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

Last October I had an new alternator fitted under warranty (2 1/2 years old with 25k on the clock). The multidot gave a message saying "Alternator - workshop!" and the battery warning light came on. So new unit fitted but I didn't really quiz the stealer why - after all it was FOC.

On the way home tonight, I start getting the multidot warning and battery light again, intermittently - and now it's on permanently.

Six months and maybe 4500 miles seems like a mighty short lifespan to me:eek:.

Would this unit have a guarantee that goes past the warranty on the whole car?

Of course it's out of manufaturer's warranty now, bit I did get a Warranty Direct (dealer service) one. But that has a £25 excess. Maybe get that from the stealer? After all, the actual part must have some form of warranty from whoever the manufacturer is.

So... any ideas what might be going on? Think it's likely to be a fault the stealer missed first time round, and a perfectly good alternator was replaced?

cheers

Do I remember reading somewhere that water has a tendency to leak straight onto the alternator on this car...?

Or was that the mk2 Golf?

Well, if it was the Suberb then that's where I'll place my money, if it was the Golf then...er... I don't know!

Sorry :D
