Octy DSG alternatives

Featured Replies

Beginning to think about changing my Octy II 1.9 Tdi DSG. Love the car and gearbox and would happily have another, but probably move up to a 2.00 TDI, or Common Rail equivalent when it comes.

however It is only right that I check out the competition - so whats available??

I do about 7-800mls a weeks so must be diesel and economy is very important.

Main commute is a twisting, up and down A road, then a bit of town traffic so DSG excels.

I like the civic but don't do diesel auto

Don't think the DSG type box is available in the Focus yet, and not a big Ford fan anyway.

Golf seems poor value compare to Octy

Seat Leon a possibility.

Also thinking possibly BMW 118d. more expensive to buy I know, but good economy and residuals - unlimited miles 3 year warranty (I think) - will probably do about 90-100K in that time. Service packages look ok value.

Is the auto option is this a DSG equivalent ?

Any other options out there?

There is no equivalent to DSG, not even Ferrari's robotised gearboxes come close to the DSG's shift time. If you want DSG you have to stick with VAG because no traditional torque converter automatic will come close to the performance it offers, especially with diesel engines

Leon is a nice car, would have one over a Golf or A3 but what you have now is working good for you?

The Focus is available with the new powershift auto box, though only in the TDCi's I think, oh and only on Zetec or Titanium models.

BMW 118d would be a good move as is also in £35 per year tax bracket (apparently). On the other hand could go for astra 1.9cdti 150 bhp? Not quite as nice as VAG stuff though. Maybe a fiat bravo? 5yr warranty not sure o engines etc tho?

Mitsubishi Lancer 2.0 TDI 138PS , I think this is going to be availible with a DSG-alike system - or maybe its the 'real deal' as the engine is from VW. IIRC the Evo is going to get the system first.

was beginning to lean towards the BMW 118D because of the economy but have found out that the Efficiency Dynamics package is not available with Steptronic.

Leon sounds good but miles from the nearest dealer. Might just look at a 2.0Td Elegance Octy with sports suspension and compare this with Golf GT Sport (which now comes with standard leather & heated seats)
