Top cubby lid stuck - how to free it?

Featured Replies

The lid to the cubby on top of the dash won't unfasten itself. It hasn't got anything more in it than it had yesterday - just a few pens - yet today it won't open. The lid does depress in the usual way when you push down on it. I don't use it much.

Anyone got any ideas how I could free it? Its the first fault in 23,000m!

whack it?

use a knife to lever it up?

You can actually extract the entire unit. Have a look at Stu's excellent MFD2 install guide here:-

Thanks Dor

What exactly does a "trim removal tool" look like? Is it a thin screwdrivery sort of thing? I'm terrified of damaging the car (especially as it its a company car)

Its difficult to tell whether, even if I did manage to extract the whole box, I could release the lid. The mechanism may be entirely internal...

trim removal tool is a thin piece of plastice, you can use either a plastic ruler or a knife for the same job. In this case all it does is disconnect a clip so you would be alright damage wise

.

I use my thumbnails if I don't have the trim tools to hand.

As Roo says a thin piece of plastic or a steel rule with some tape round it would be fine.

You only need to lever in the 2 points under the vent direction wheels.

.............and if you did damage it, I cant imagine that its gonna be that expensive to replace......

if its like mine when i load it up funny, then jams, i just push harder on it, seems to sort itself out then...

Got it!

Pulled it up hard with my fingernails and then shoved it down and it came. I think a pen had prevented it going down far enough to unlock. I'll remember next time to take the car out and jam on the anchors to move objects forward. Subtle stuff!

.......or put the pen in the proper place for it - in the two little clips in the glovebox lid :)
