New brakes fitted - LOUD squealing

Featured Replies

Hi guys.

Firstly, I know this topic has been done to death and I have searched through loads of posts, but none seem to have an answer to my problem.

I recently had new rear discs and pads fitted due to an MOT fail. The first 100 miles were ok, braking gently to 'wear them in'. I've now done about 750 miles and the brakes squeal, very loudly, when coming down from around 7 - mph until stop. It started after about 100 miles and has been getting worse and worse.

I phoned the garage and they told me this was normal as they are still settling in, and only to worry if they are still squealing after 1000 - 1500 miles. Does this sound true to you?

Also, I have started to notice the dreaded 'mooing' now too. Only probably 10% of the time though.

The squealing is driving me mad so any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Rob

Check that they have used copaslip or aluminium ant squeal compound on the back of the pads.

Also try having them power washed to get rid of all the brake dust caused when bedding in.

The mooing should only be noticeable when you reverse then apply the brakes.

It might be worth checking the anti-rattle shims, these are the thin little metal clips that you place on the caliper then seat the pads on, if they are not flat they can catch on the disc and make a squeaking or grinding noise.

Other than that yes, new pads can squeal for a while until they settle in and some pads do it more than others. From past posts by members on here, aftermarket pads do it more than the OEM Skoda ones.

My front nearside caliper squeals all the time, I took it off and greased up the back of the pads and the surfaces on the caliper they slide along and this cured it... but only for about a week! :S

on a nice quiet road with no traffic behind try a couple of stops using the handbrake gently from 60mph or so, dont yank it on just gently work it untill you feel it slowing the car and keep it there till you come to a stop, the octavia uses very little rear brake pressure when stopping normally and they sometimes just glaze the pads up instead of bedding in properly.

Get a set of anty squeal pads and replace the metal 1s that are there.

Have worked on many taxis with this happen and its just down to luck.

But putting rubber anty squeal pads on has always given me a 100% fix.

Just as a side note: doing this will cause a light to flash on the dash, and some beeping too, as the car will try and warn you your travelling with the handbrake on....

Ok, tried some 'aggressive' braking and the handbrake trick, and it seems to be getting better.

Thanks for all your help on this everyone, much appreciated.

Anti-squeal pads?? Where from and how much??

This mooing is getting so bad it is driving me nuts :swear:

I'm glad I'm not the only one with this problem.

I got the car 3 weeks ago today and it started about 100 miles after I picked it up too. Anyways, I have been to Scotland and back - done 1500 miles and it's still doing it. I took it back to Skoda twice and each time it hasn't done it - typical eh! They have agreed to take them off and grease them all up and clean them - I really hope it cures it.

It sounds like it's just the dust build up mate, but I will let you know if cleanign them makes a difference.

I'm going to speak to my local dealers about it next week. I went to them about the mooing 2 years ago not long after I bought the car, they said it was a known problem and if I took it back to them the next time the rear brake pads needed doing they would put some chamfered edged pads on (bit miffed that as it was a known fault they weren't volunteering to do it for free), needless to say since then I've not really used the dealers for servicing or anything and when the rear disks and pads needed doing last year I did them myself with Mintex discs and pads thinking it would sort the noise... it hasn't!!! So will be going to the dealer and asking them if they really do have a fix for it and if so how much the parts are

The most embarrassing mooing incident was when I reversed in a crematorium carpark in front of a crowd of 200 silent mourners. MOOOOOOOOO :o:rofl:

It can't be dust build up, not the way I brake lol

I know there was a mention of an anti-resonance kit for the rear but I don't see why I have to pay £110 (I think it was) for something that wasn't there before I changed the pads.

Since I've done the suspension and the dogbone it seems to resonate right through the car.

It is getting really embarassing now :dull:

I have same problem and it is permanently squealing at lower speeds and although it does get better doing a long run i still have this problem with over 2000 miles done. agree dam annoying. I think that in my case my rear discs are a little worn making problem worse and more recently i have also started to get a clunking on the rear offside caliper. This i think is down to no shims or possibly anti squeal pads not being used and the pad is dragging on the disc surface. I am changing discs and pads over the next week so hopefully it goes away too.

Does cleaning them actually fix the problem then?

Before I collected my car it had Pads and Discs all round.

This is definitely not "normal" . The garage probably havn't cleaned the rust off the pad seating/sliding areas of the caliper and carrier The garage are "hoping" it will go with use or you will not persue the matter any further. Most decent OEM quality pads will have anti-squealing film already applied to the non-friction surface of the pads. Tell them the brakes were not making this noise before they fitted the new pads and it is not normal for new pads to emit this noise and you want it sorted !

Ok update to my squealing problem. Took some pics if it helps anyone.

So I decided to get new Rear disc's and pads. And just as well as this is the state of what I took off:

Pics shows the pads removed and you can see the actual pad material broken away from the metal that it should be attached to. This explains the clunking and squealing as the pad material would of been moving around in the caliper and probably sometimes jamming against the disc .

Also Discs were in a pretty poor state.

Dads2010264.jpg

I went for a box set and these were a very good price.

Mintex set £56 delivered, stated for Audi S3 but checked and they are the same.

Dads2010242.jpg

Pic of the Caliper rewind tool used to wind in the piston which is really needed as without it, is a real pain.

Dads2010254.jpg

New Disc fitted and caplier bracket fitted. Pads inserted and left backing on

Dads2010256.jpg

Pad backing removed and you can see the original anti squeal shims still in place. Ready for floating caliper to be fitted.

Dads2010249.jpg

Job competed and calipers repainted whilst i was at it.

No more squealing now
