Featured Replies

Below are pictures of the aerial and base on my car, as you can see their pretty ugly.

Does anybody know why I have this? I'm guessing it's a result of having factory sat nav, can anyone confirm?

I'd like to know if I can change this over. I know that it can physically be done. but not sure if it will have adverse effects on the functions of the head unit.

Thanks.

You're right, it's the sat nav aerial.

Pretty certain from looking at it that the aerial part of it will unscrew as normal?

Yeh the aerial is a standard screw, but I'm wanting to change the aerial base.

I know it probably could be done using other VAG counter parts. However I'm unsure about how this will affect the function of the sat nav?

I'd imagine if you change it, your sat nav won't function at all.

The sat nav in the Fabia is pretty undocumented and so I'm guessing that it won't be plug and play!

Normal aerial and it's base around £42.00 I paid at (Skoda), when some kind person ripped off the aerial antenna out damaging the base threads.emoticon-0112-wondering.gif

If I change it, I'll probably look at a shark fin/Polo base. The latter being more favoured as it means I could fit a 9R aerial.

Gunna have to do some research on the importance of this base I guess.

If anyone who owns or knows of someone who's owns a VAG car with factor sat nav give me a shout.

I'm gonna have a look at the interior connections when I get a chance.

The circular part is the GPS antenna.

The circular part is the GPS antenna.

Ah OK. Thanks for that.

I'm gonna look for modern VAGs with GPS then and see what aerial they sport.

That's the satnav base. IF you've got factory satnav then this will be the correct aerial+base for it.

The front of the base contains the GPS part, and the actual aerial whip is of a different thread size to other normal aerials, so your regular stubbie aerials (which everyone seems to fit) will not screw in.

If you really find it that fugly, then you can start to think about getting shark fin aerials from mk5 Golfs (or that era), but from what I remember you need to modify the connectors slightly.

There are some very detailed how to's on VWvortex, but you'll need to look thru the archives as those sorts of mods were done years ago now!

This is the GPS aerial on myR32, but in this pic I fitted a stupidly short GPS aerial from a VW sharan. The Radio reception was non-existant with that aerial fitted, so I quickly reverted back to the mega long bee sting!
