Coding new Steering Control Module: Advice please.

Featured Replies

I've taken the plunge and purchased a used Steering Control Module from a member on here (thanks Browny_37) with the intention of fitting CC, MFSW & Possibly Maxidot in the future).

It's a 1K0 953 549 AM module.

I've read enough about removing steering wheels, airbags and also about coding the CC so I'm pretty confident with that, but there seems to be very little about swapping steering control modules.

I have VCDS and have coded various other retro fits quite competently, so, does anyone have any good advice about swapping these around and coding them with VCDS?

I believe the module was originally sent out set up for DSG vehicle but Browny_37 had it recoded for a manual car. Am I likely to encounter any difficulties (mine is a manual diesel) with coding it to my car?

Do I just write down the current coding and then enter this on to the new module before going on to add CC?

code for now as per old unit. to code for extras see list

Hi

what is the part number of your current control module?

  • Author

Eddie-NL: 1K0 953 549 BC

Freelanderman: thanks for the full breakdown in advance - presume that is all entered via soft coding?

  • Author

Thanks Eddie-NL: I didn't spot that when I bought the controller.

Ross Tech state two part numbers: 1K0-959-653 and 1K0-959-653-A.

How much is that going to cost?

Does it need any additional wiring for the steering angle sensor being in a different place?

New slip rings are about £45 new

look on ebay too as they pop up om there

no other changes

Would this one be OK then?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/180894328877

Or a presumeably newer 'C' version woul still be OK?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/320865764360

What's the likelyhood of it not 'working' properly: I admit that I don't really understand what the slip ring does...

You probably have a C version now

If you fit the wrong one you may end up with the horn not working or the buttons may not work on the mfsw

So the 'C' is actually a Type 2 slip ring and I need to get a Type 1 (which is either the 'A' suffix or one with no suffix)?

So the first link would be the one to go for then?

I have never upgraded a Type 1 set up to a MFSW, but I would suggest buying the one in the first link.

Thanks to everyone for their advice - I have discovered some good news though!

It's not new, but I only found it on this forum yesterday.

According to Ross Tech, the 'BC' steering controller that I have fitted will not accept CC.

However a statement on CarSystems.pl about there possibly being a software issue with some BC controllers got me thinking. Then I came across a post by Vrs_pagey on this forum. That and a bit more internet searching led me to feel that the early 'BC' controllers (mine is 036 SW 0070) will work with CC.

Well today, I have tried it and, BOOM, it works.

And I have a light on the dash.

And no extra wiring was needed (MY '07).

And it only cost £25 from Browny_37.

I will be upgrading the steering controller, but not until I have sourced a MFSW, so there will be a steering controller for CC up for sale in the future.

Thanks everyone.

There are no problems with BC controllers. I pointed out the issue is the HW and SW 638 0070 will not work with cruise. I have seen BC, BD, AQ with that HW/SW not work with cruise
