accelerator peddle mounting woes

I was driving along the motorway today, when i was overtaking a lorry i pulled out into the middle lane put pushed the peddle down and it couldn't go any further than a bit over half way, so by the time i had analysed the prob the lorry sped up a bit so i had to brake and pull back in behind him when i got home i had a rummage behind the peddle and found a stone there managed to pull it out and the peddle returned to normal, why is the peddle mounted on the floor in most vw cars now? i like it being mounted on the bulkhead as the floor mat can get trapped under and jam it on. anyone else had probs with the accelerator?

I don't thing floor mounted accelerator pedals are something restricted to VW cars. I hav'nt had a car with a bulkhead mounted accerator for more years than I care to remember. If you don't keep the floor clean in the drivers footwell, there is always a risk of a stone jamming the accelerator. It only happened to me once and that was after I had visited a place with a lot of small stones and failed to clean out the resultant gravel for a few days.

its the 1st time its happened to me too, still don't get the idea of mounting it on the floor, i much prefer it on the bulkhead

The floor mounted or "organ style" pedal is supposed to be more comfortable as it moves in the same plane as the ankle. The top hinged, on the other hand, moves in a conflicting arc to the ankle and leads to friction between the shoe and the pedal, thus increasing wear on the pedal and the bottom of the shoe. It's more comfortable if you place the rear edge of your shoe at the point of the hinge, though personally I never remember to do this unless I'm on a long journey.

There's also a safety issue with top hinged with the risk of more foot and ankle injuries in an accident.

i tried doing that, sitting the bottom of my foot on the bottom of the peddle and the rest of it totally flush to it, it was actually comfortable but when you had to brake and then put the foot back in that position it takes to long and i have big feet (size 12) so trying to get it back is to much of a hassle, but i have aftermarket floor mats in and i had to cut a massive chunk of it out to to fit round the peddle and i still have to move it back now and then as if gets to close to the hinge of the peddle i am afraid it might get jammed and wedge the throttle on, silly idea in my opinion, the bulkhead mounted is a more sensible idea

It sounds like you're too close. Have you tried moving the seat back a little (and the wheel with it, of course)?

Had that before with something like a stone, rock and at first is quite startling until I realised what it was.

As for the foot positioning on the accelerator, having driven many cars with it, I cannot drive with my foot flat to the pedal, I tend to just use the top half of my foot and roll my heel across to use the brake.

i need the seat quite far forwards and it is comfortable enough for me, just trying to get the foot back in that position is too long

I have found that the pedal assembly that is floor mounted is far more comfortable than the pendant type, so far in 50 hyears of driving cars and comercial vehicles been fortunate in never having a stone or anything catch in the accelerator mechanism despite finding over the years hundreds of stones of all sizes in the footwells.

You say you need the seat quite far forward, are you following the safe minimum distance from the steering wheel just in case the airbag is actvated, I have seen the results of injury through sitting too close.

i need the seat forwards as to reach the peddles, if i have it any further back i start crunching gears, so unless i need it quite far forwards as to depress the clutch fully, and when i get out the car i put the chair right back so it is easier to get out. my brother has a 12 plate superb 1.6 tdi hatch too, and he too is quite short in the leg so he also has the seat far forwards and put it back before getting out to make exiting easier
