Matte or Gloss - Opinions please

Featured Replies

I am seriously thinking about wrapping the roof of my car in either matte or Gloss black vinyl. I would probably get the door pillars, mirrors and part of the spoiler done as well.

I have a list of pros and cons for both.

Gloss pros

Will (hopefully) match the black alloys.

I like the gloss 2 tone effect on other cars.

Protect roof from droppings and other muck.

Gloss cons

May show scratches easily (I also have noticed a lot of black gloss roof's get attacked by small birds. I think they are fighting their reflections. I don't know how vinyl will hold up to this).

Protect roof from droppings and other muck.

Matte pros

Less susceptible to scratches than gloss

Looks good (can look old as well)

Matte cons

Looks old fashioned. Matte vinyl (unless you do the whole car) looks old. I remember on my first car I wished I had colour matched mirrors, bumpers etc. I matte roof reminds me of old Cortina’s, Capri's etc.

might be a sod to clean.

I've also thought about carbon fibre and I like the carbon look but I haven’t seen a vinyl that doesn't look totally fake up close unless its indoor vinyl.

Opinions welcome... (sensible ones)

I would say Gloss :)

I don't think Matt would look right.

I'm looking to do exactly the same on my silver sport but can't decide which of the three uv mentioned to go for, u just saved me a long whinded question so looking forward to people's opinions. Any idea of the cost to do the roof, pillars, mirrors and spoiler?

What colour is ur car as that will help others understand the contrast with the colouring effert of Matte, Glass and Carbon?

I've also considered wrapping the exterior door trim to match as mine is not body coloured just plastic black.

Black Gloss on a Silver Octy would look great :)

Looks like the OP's car is green, I like the look of matte myself for Vinyl. If you are going to go gloss then I would get it painted as for some reason Glossy vinyl looks odd.

A green one? I'd go with gloss black (roof, bonnet, wings, doors, hatch etc.) ;)

So.....

Black 18" BBS CH Stye rims.

Black grille.

Black roof and possible pillars.

Black mirrors.

Black spoiler.

Black or body coloured exterior door trim.

.......in gloss......hmmm I'm picturing it now!

Definately gloss IMO - forget the wheels on this pic, but the roof just doesn't work:

Green eh, new vrs green or old ambient green?

It would work with a black grille and mirrors though. Those wheels are shocking I must add, what are they thinking???

i put matt black mirrors on the old 2010 vrs, looked ok but you could argue it was a bit "base model"..

for the new car i have gloss black caps, and yep, you guessed it - stone chipped already.. d'oh!

I think the spoiler would benefit from a little wrapping also, just the top section but leave the wing tips blue but hey ho that's just my opinion, looks sweet tho!

Hmm.... I think there may be some form of sarcasm there.... LOL

Green is the new black. You know what they say "Once you go green..." Think it may only apply to corpses though.

Heavily tainted with sarcasm. I'd go with gloss everytime over matt.

Matt black on the bonnet was traditional to dissipate engine heat and reduce glare. But on the roof I'd go gloss.
