Service advice please...

About to service my 2000 Fabia 1.4 16v (6y2) and was wondering which plugs and what grade of oil to buy with mind towards best performance. Many thanks.

Get NGK Iridium plugs from here:

http://www.sparkplugs.co.uk/

They're worth the extra money.

Oil is mostly oil when it comes to N/A petrol engines, if it'll float the mains it's usually good enough, however since you have an AUB I would suggest a semi-syn 10W40 would be more than adequate, don't waste your money on exotic superfluids, it won't make any difference (cue anguished screaming from those who DO waste their money on something which makes absolutely no difference on such a low powered engine).

Cheers for that. I called the local parts place and the woman on the phone gave me some spiel about the advantage if not necessity of getting the Bosch 4 tip plugs. Is there any truth in this?

Also seen an offer on ebay for 4l castrol magnatec 10w/40 @ £20...would this be suitable/worth it?

bosch plugs are not worth the value in scrap they are a hopeless plug and engines never seem to run properly on them as unlike ngk and equivalent spark plugs the little prong doesnt go all the way over the electrode ...

as for ngk iridium plugs i wouldnt bother either as they have a short life span and in something such as a 1.4 fabia i would stick to standard ngk plugs

With respect you don't have this engine and I do, you're right about the Bosch plugs though, they're crap.

I can categorically assure you that the NGK Iridium plugs actually last much longer which is why I recommended them, I have used them in all my VW's since my beloved Golf 16v, through my VR6, my 20v, right through to my present Fab, they only cost a tenner more for a set but last nearly twice as long.

Nic, that oil will be fine, trust me, get the plugs I recommended I don't drive an oil burner so I really do know what an important difference they make.

I have used many many different plugs in motorcycles and iridium plugs didnt last very long at all and yes i do have a vrs tdi now but have run a 1.4 mpi polo and a 1.4 206 previously ....

iridium plugs were first put out there as a performance plug for higher spec cars i wouldnt say a 1.4 fabia comes in to this ( no offence ) and the benefits will be very minimal

It's not a performance plug, there's no such thing.

It is however a single electrode fine wire plug and is very good at staying clean, the Iridium plating is incredibly hard and corrosion resistant so it works better for longer in lean burn engines with high-energy ignition systems like the 1.4 16v.

After 10,000 miles they still look like new unlike the multi-electrode type where the erosion is noticeable. As an additional benefit you can re-gap them long after you've thrown away the multi-electrode crap.

a standard ngk is a single electrode plug .... we both agreed earlier that bosch multi electrode plugs arent worth their weight in scrap ....

there are many many many other forums discussing this :

motorcycle track forums

road bike forums

motocross forums

celica

supra

auto world

4x4 forums

mazda

pontiac

etc etc etc....

there are so many other threads out there on iridium plugs ... denso ngk etc...

it always boils down to the same thing

on a stock car there is a very little advantages given the cost difference

It's a TENNER extra for the WHOLE set, my experience is that they last longer. I'm not lying, I'm not making it up. What exactly is your issue with my advice?

Edit: Oh, and no, the standard NGK plug for this car is a triple electrode.

lol really?

i have no issue with your advice i am not saying you are wrong

the lad who started the tread was asking for advice you gave you advice , opinions, recommendations, experiences. i gave mine.

you was the one who started with the he drives an oil burner ****** and are taking this personally

You're muddying the thread with ill informed third-hand advice AFTER I'd given sound practical advice from a first-hand perspective with the exact same engine as the OP which I still actually own and maintain.

What other way to take that is there than to take it personally?

Protip: Putting 'lol really' just makes you sound even more stupid than just being wrong does.

3rd hand?? not really no

why would you take it personally. some one asks for advice so some of us try to help rather than trying to inflate our ego's

a couple of different perspectives are often better for helping people decide rather than one person saying " i think im awesome do as i say"

It's not that, it's that you contradicted my advice for entirely the wrong reasons, you didn't know that the standard plugs were the crappy multi electrode type and I did.

All this backpedalling is just absurd and irritating. So you made a mistake, just stop slugging away at me digging yourself in even deeper and I promise I won't try and tell you what colour EGR delete to use on your oil burner.

I dont think ive ever come across anyone more self righteous.

Is it possible for you to accept that you may be wrong?

Absolutely, just not about this. If I don't know I don't speculate.

You're confusing self righteous with righteous indignation.

jealously is a cruel cruel mistress but dont worry buddy one day you will be able to afford the superior vrs model .... after all you can get a higher mileage one for just over 3k now ....

and yes you can get standard ngk single electrode plugs for the 16v engine:

http://www.bestpartstore.co.uk/1042796

and you can get genuine ones for a tad over £6

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GENUINE-SKODA-FABIA-1-4-16V-MANUAL-00-SPARK-PLUG-/360659102370#vi-content

but if you really want to pay £4 per plug more then have iridium plugs :

http://compare.ebay.co.uk/like/271037115944?var=lv&ltyp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes&var=sbar&_lwgsi=y&cbt=y&device=c&adtype=pla&crdt=0&ff3=1&ff11=ICEP3.0.0&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=63&ff19=0

Those single electrode plugs are no good for the 1.4 16v AUB I'm afraid.

Those genuine ones are the crummy Bosch multi-electrode repackaged I'll be bound.

http://www.sparkplugs.co.uk are only £28.75 inc. plus postage for a full set of NGK Iridiums, I've used them for years, they always deliver quickly and reliably. Postage was only £1.99 last time I bought there.

I could afford the VRS, I just don't like diesels, can't stand the smell. I'm considering a Saab 9-3 2.0T Aero but this Fab still only has 87k on it and there's nothing wrong with it and nothing I don't like about it.
