Headlight washer not working

Featured Replies

Just the nearside one. Offside is fine. I don't know the mechanics of this - is it likely just to be a blockage in one of the pipes? Any other ideas?

The washer isn't just dry - it's not coming out from the body.

Probably came off, water pressure forces it out.

No, it's still there, just not coming out.

The pipe has come off I mean.

Oh, I see. And is that easy to put back for an idiot, or might I have to unscrew something?

Have a look at the back of the headlight, you can normally see the connection at the bottom.

Thanks, I'll have a poke around.

Fixed it yet?

i I have these parts in bits on my B5 Passat 2000MY and my wife's 9N Polo 2002MY, how they tend to get put together is, either a painted or, in your case, a chromed cover is "snapped" onto the backing cover, that is "snapped" on to the washer pillar/spray - by "snapped" on I mean it is just maybe 4-off friction clips that keep them together. With time, dirt can end up under/between these covers so they get slightly/partially unclipped. To sort this, you need to be brave and either slowly pull the pillar up, or probably a better way is to grab the raised pillar when someone else operates the washer, once you have it raised up you can see how these covers come off, clean under them and press them back together with the pillar still held up, or pull it back up. Although, you might find that a clip is broken or incorrectly formed, in which case you can either live with this issue or order in a new top part - they will all have VAG P/N moulded into them.

It's fixed, though entirely by luck and the helpful posts here rather than my good judgement. Had a poke around the back of the headlight as suggested. Nothing had come adrift, but I managed to dislodge the front cover, so took it off altogether, since I now knew how it went together. Panicked when I couldn't reattach it until I realized you could pull out the nozzle by hand. Reattached it. Took it off again and reattached it the right way up. Panicked because now not even the wipers were working. Realized that was because the bonnet was up. Closed the bonnet. Panicked because now neither headlamp washer was working. Remembered they wouldn't work unless the lights were on. Switched on lights and both are now working.

I haven't had occasion to use the washers since I got the car, and it was probably standing around for a few months before then, so I'd guess it had just seized up through lack of use. In future, I think I'll give them a quick squirt each time I wash the car. (Beforehand, naturally: I can see why some people disable them!)

Well done, mate!

And yes, lol, u sound just like me (panic panic panic)! :-)

(Wayne panicking now, coz he's disabled his washer - eeeek!)
