I got rid of the flimsy battery cover and installed the boxtype cover. Looks much better.

Also found that Geiti only has 61Ah battery. Will have to find an Exide 77Ah before the next winter.

Didn't have problems last winter with the 61Ah, but now with the webasto heater things may change.

Mine have it from its own! 1,6 tdi...

My new 1.8 L&K came with the proper battery box -I had to fit one on my 140 elegance. I felt it was an astonishingly cheapskate bit of penny pinching which lowered the impression of build quality by a disproportionate amount.

May look better, but how much time do you spend looking at the battery? Waste of money if you ask me.

Understand your point entirely, sleeping in shredded newspaper is not a popular choice although no doubt perfectly functional. When that area was signed off for production what was the person in charge thinking? "Looks cheap and insubstantial, fine for our customers and what a finishing touch for our assembly team"

I fear the engineering attitude "Never mind no one will see".

I agree with you here... BUT the reason for a cover is to insulate the battery better from cold (which batteries hate). This plastic box does that a great deal better than the ill fitting bit of felt they originally fitted.

Solid cover would be a nuisance to me, as I can clip my MSA radio direct to the battery poles with the soft cover and just put it back over them. Couldn't do that with the hard cover.

I've fitted the battery box, obtained via Ebay from a salvage merchant for buttons in 'as new' condition. Easy to fit and I can still access the 'fly lead' for my CTEK battery conditioner without lifting the top cover.

I just had to reset the dash clock and drive the car a few yards to clear the dash warnings!

It seems that the box is now being fitted on the line, which I'm pleased about.

Now ended up with no battery box and no soft cover

Purchased a 70 Ah AGM battery for approximately £99,00. When leaving the shop the seller said I should rather have the 80 Ah AGM

Had to remove the battery box and also do some modifications to the battery tray due to the extended length of the new AGM battery. Length is 315mm. The 61 Ah battery it replaced was 241mm.

Disaster, last week the 80 Ah AGM battery suddenly died. Managed to drive home after a mechanic from the dealer assisted with a booster. Connected battery to a CTEK charger over the night. Piggybacked back to dealer the next day as there was no power in the battery. Not even enough power to unlock all doors! Dealer found the battery to have a severe internal defect. Battery temporarily replaced with the original 62 Ah battery and then found a relay which caused some error codes. Relay replaced and all well.

Went back to battery supplier yesterday and swapped the battery, now got a Varta 80 Ah AGM. No questions asked, just “come on, let’s find you a new battery”. Will install this battery during the weekend.
