No brake lights? Probably an easy fix...

Featured Replies

Thought I would post this if it might help...

The other day, I realised my Octy VRs had no brake lights  as every time I reverse away from my house, I check the rear lamps in the reflection of my lounge windows

Anyway, after a quick check of the fuses and boot connectors, I got to the brake-light switch on the brake pedal with a multimeter - and found that the switch was defective.

I am a student and hence skint - so before running to a main stealer, I removed the switch and had a look in my workshop.

The good news is - the switch is clipped together, and easily comes apart.

Once inside, I was greeted with blackened, burned terminals.

But no worries - a few minutes of scraping with a screwdriver, and some electrical contact cleaner, saw the terminals as good as new. And hence, I clipped the unit back together, replaced it into the car - and here we are a month or so on, and we still have perfectly functioning brake lights.

So - a handy tip - these little units can be repaired, no need to buy a new one.

Hope this helps!

But it will happen again and again.

I tried a few repairs, but replacing was the only way to stop it keep happening and I didn't like the fear of no brakes lights whilst driving.

Plus it's under a tenner for a new one from vw (or was last year)

Yeah I paid about a tenner for one from TPS a couple of months ago.
