Intermittent misfire

Featured Replies

Hi I'm trying to find an intermittent cold start misfire on my vrs,I have vagcom and there are no codes, going into measuring blocks misfire detection is disabled for reason,I have had this problem for over a year now, before it would only happen maybye once every couple of months but now it's happening every other week, coils were changed last year at skoda, plugs have been changed and gapped properly, car has a stage 2 remap by shark performance but fault was there before remap, also I have replaced the coolant temp sensor also,I was hoping to look at the misfire counters on start up but with it disabled its not possible,is it possible this was disabled when shark performance remapped my car?

Have you looked at the reading from the coolant temp sensor on VCDS?

What are your HT leads like? They can slowly degenerate and cause misfire under load. Is it worse when its cold and wet?

Errr, coil on plugs?

In measuring blocks coolant temp was 22c,that's was yesterday afternoon, outside temp was reading 21c,it's a strange one,I do suspect a bad coil but with misfire detection disabled there is no way of knowing apart from changing all 4 coils,I did also think of a bad coolant temp sensor giving a lower reading and firing in too much fuel but when it misfires there is no black smoke out the exhaust to suggest its over fuelling,no black smoke makes me think its not getting enough fuel,I'm tempted to fit a fuel pressure gauge to see what happens.

Doesn't necessarily have to be producing smoke to be over fuelling. Get it up to temperature and see what the coolant temps are reported as?

Engine mb 002 3rd column is the engine temp the ECU is seeing.

Never heard of misfire detection being disabled on VCDS. Are using VCDS lite free version or registered fully enabled?

It's the full version,I don't know if shark performance have disabled it when it was remapped, looking on the Internet especially on vortex it is a common thing for tuners over there to do,will look at coolant temp when warm see what it says.

When engine is fully warm VCDS engine MB 002 temp should be about 88c.

Well came home from work tonight and got vagcom hooked up,coolant temp was 89c,gradually crept up to 94c then the fans kicked in,so I think the coolant temp sensor is ok,I'm not sure where to go next apart from changing all the coils,it's weird how it only does it on a cold start, apart from that the car runs perfect, boosts at 1.6 bar and start tailing off at 5000 rpm as expected.

Are you sure it isn't just the SAI doing it's thing on cold start up?

Sai system has been removed and been remapped out by shark performance, now that I think about it the fault only started after the sai system was removed.maybye something I will have to live with or I wonder if shark performance can tweak the map.
