  1. I'll give that a try and see what happens. A pretty sure way to cause the problem is to hit 70mph in fourth gear (as one might where the sliproad is short) so I'll go do that. I think as others have reported it tends to happen at 3000rpm.
  2. trudlenut: yeah, fatty5000 did the VAGCOM thing for me last time... after trying to clean the old MAF I just replaced it, but the car's done maybe 10000 miles since. Mileage is 77xxx, driving is Caerfilthy - Cardiff and the surrounding area. Daily commute is maybe 15 miles each way. Is leaving the MAF unplugged really a good idea? I got the impression it wasn't something you wanted to do for long. There's a few things I want a mechanic to look at anyway so might just do that (it's not been happy cold starting this winter either, which predates the turbo problems).
  3. Precisely two years ago I had the old 'give it some welly -> turbo cuts out -> like driving a 1970s diesel golf filled with bricks until you turn off and restart the engine' problem. This was fixed by buying a new MAF from the stealer and fitting it myself. It's now happening again. Do these things really only last two years? Or should I perhaps take a page out of this thread and get a mechanic to check it and see if perhaps the turbo is sticking before I just throw another £60 on another MAF? Cheers! 2002 1.9 110bhp TDI Octy
  4. I'm sure I ran a poll about the armrest years ago... and was told by most people that they always used theirs and that I was nuts to think that it blocked the operation of the gearshift and handbrake!
  5. Thanks for this guys, mine does this all the time when it's cold and it's annoying. My parents have a Mk4 Golf and they say theirs does it almost constantly, and the stealer wanted to charge them £200 or so to fix it.
  6. I'm interested to hear what the outcome of this is as well, as mine is having a few problems starting in the cold (have to hold the key for a second or two as it struggles to life, and a bit of smoke) and it's a bit embarassing! Once it's started the first time it'll start immediately and with no problems the second time, even if you switch the engine back off immediately. EDIT: Just found this thread which might resolve the smoke problem at least! http://briskoda.net/ask-tech/octy-1-tdi-question-smokey-starting/131351/
  7. It was on variable service when it came due for (and asked for) me to go in for the 60k service. I've submitted details of the dent (and the numerous other stonechips the car has accrued over the years!) to Chips Away as if someone will come round and sort it all on the spot I'd be very happy indeed! Never heard of them before, thanks for that!
  8. I wouldn't put it past them, they've been pretty hopeless at best. Staff are friendly and all, but I've had to go back several times to get little niggles like this fixed (Griffin Mill in Pontypridd). I shall make an appointment forthwith, and advise I don't intend to pay anything for their fixing the service interval. Ta!
  9. Hello! My car (Mk1 Octy TDI) had its supermegabreakyourbank 60k service roughly nine months ago, at 65k. The car is now just over 69k and is now telling me it wants another service in 1000 miles time! Has the stealer screwed it up (probably, they wrote the wrong expected mileage for the next service on my schedule initially until I queried it and they hastily scribbled the right one down) or is this a sign that something could be going wrong/wearing out already? On an unrelated topic, would the dealer charge over the odds for a tiny bit of bodywork (popping a dent back out) compared to a local bodyshop? Only, if I'm taking it in for one thing, might as well get the other done as well, y'know. Thanks in advance! EDIT: Forgot to mention, it's on variable service
  10. Someone pinched the Skoda badge off the back of my Octy... Either Skoda really is turning its image around to the point that the badge is seen as worth nicking.... or it was one desperate, desperate **** who did it.
  11. It couldn't be the CV joints, could it? Unless that's what you meant by 'links'...
  12. Regarding the MAF, does the car perform as it should if you push it to a high rev (for my Elegance 1.9TDi, which is 110bhp whereas the Ambiente is 90bhp) or do you suddenly and mysteriously lose a lot of 'oomph'? I only throw that out as in my case it seems that was a sure sign of the MAF. I'd also add that it was
  13. I made do with Golf ones from my local VW dealer after the local Skoda dealer didn't have any in stock! Just don't buy the Halfords ones - bleegh. My mother has a Mk4 Golf and the Halfords ones were noisy as hell AND cost more than the official VAG ones!
  14. The 'water gets into the plug and rots the connectors' thing? Oh dear. :(
  15. Yup, although that isn't working DGW if I google it I find loads of stuff which all of which say MAF first, N75 second. Suffice it to say my appointment with the stealer to pay
