  1. Test drive a few with different engines and see what you think. My past four cars have all had the 2.0 TDI 140, I now have a Greenline 1.6 TDI Estate. Obviously the 2.0 has more power, but in real world driving the 1.6 is adequate and not that far behind a 140, with great fuel economy.

Since having mine new last year it has averaged just over 60mpg real world, sometimes over 70+ going carefully - if it's economy you want this is the one to go for.

I test drove a 170 and it goes very well, but most of my driving is spent going up and down the UK motorways so based on that the 1.6 still gives a relaxed drive so it suits my needs just fine.

More power is always nice but if most people are perfectly honest they don't need it - what people want and what you need are not the same things, have a test drive and go from there.

  2. The Continental specification (same as RNS 510 in VW's) does mention it has a USB drive that can be connected although it doesn't give any further details. Further investigation may reveal otherwise.

Read the last paragraph here http://www.conti-online.com/www/automotive_de_en/themes/passenger_cars/interior/multimedia/rns510_en.html?page=3

These guys mention a USB kit, might be worth giving them a quick call, you can also see the other options that are available from the pictures if you scroll down the page http://hazzydayz.com/vw-rns-510-with-dab-sat-nav-dvd-player-supply--fit-brand-new-773-p.asp

Also see post 12 here, they may ne able to help http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/316816-yet-another-silly-question-whilst-i-wait/

  3. I find this odd as you can set the date in the Columbus but it doesn't display it anywhere except when you set it. When I had my first 2005 B6 Passat with the red maxidot it did display the full date with the time, when I had my second one which had a white maxidot the option was no longer there, so it is possible, it's just been deleted for some reason.

  4. The best I've seen on my Greenline 3 Estate is 78.5mpg on the readout during a gentle run. I've checked brim to brim and the readout is 2.5mpg out so a real world 76.5mpg. Now done 16k miles in it and the mpg is gradually getting better and better, especially now we have the warmer weather, and since new the average has been just over 60mpg.

Have a look at this http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/volkswagen/passat/34287/vw-sets-guinness-world-record . I did notice the handbook claims the fuel tank is 70 litres but they squeezed in almost 10 litres more. Be nice to know exactly how big the Superb tank is, I don't think anyone has ever got near filling up with 60 litres.

  5. I also went on a speed awareness course recently and it does remind you of what could happen if just a few mph over the limit - wouldn't be a bad idea if everyone went on this course every three to five years as a reminder, and I have to say my views have changed somewhat.

I also stick to 70mph on motorways as an extra 10mph increases the stopping distance and thinking time significantly, and when you leave sufficient distance between you and the vehicle in front someone usually moves in to it. Strange that you can pass a driving test then go straight on to our fastest roads with no training or motorway experience and off you go. I use the motorway almost daily and with the holiday season just beginning you can tell the people who use the motorway once or twice a year as they often do everything they shouldn't do on a motorway, yet another reason not to exceed 70mph.

Close to where I live there was a terrible motorway accident a while ago and maybe if people had been going a bit slower the death toll may have been lower - we'll never know. What surprises me is how many local people seem to have forgotten all about it and still drive like idiots http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_M5_motorway_crash

I am dead against drinking and driving, and speeding often has similar results when things go wrong, which most people seem to forget. Drinking and driving people generally see as being socially unacceptable, but speeding is often socially acceptable. To me simply don't do either.

Whatever other people's views are the limit is a legal limit, albeit perhaps not always appropriate, and we should stick to it for our own and other peoples sakes.

  6. Am I now draining my Skoda battery? How long could the dashboard cam stay running before my Skoda is out of battery?

I don't know if Skoda uses the same power management as VW, but my past three VW's have had battery power management, meaning it will cut off power consuming features always leaving enough power to start the car (hopefully!!!), including the 12v power outlets. If any aftermarket systems have been fitted which are connected directly thereby bypassing the cars intelligent power management the battery will eventually go flat.

    Read this http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/technology/glossary/battery-energy-management

  7. No chance they will do that. Liability requires the operator to stand next to the tailgate when it closes (so it only works with the button on the tailgate)

VCDS can add the same functionality to the keyfob and the gearstick button.

Not so sure about standing beside it when it closes, my friends BMW tailgate opens and closes until the fob is out of range.

The downside to this is sometimes we're in the office and if something in his pocket presses the button while its in his pocket the tailgate opens and you aren't aware until you either go home or someone mentions there's a car outside with the back open - a good enough reason to be beside the car alone.

  8. Talking of the Columbus navigation.... While I wait for mine to arrive in a few weeks, dose it use full UK postcodes?

    Stuart

Yep, full postcode. I've had my Superb FL since October last year and it had full postcode back then, not sure which version mapping or when it began, my last Passat CC with RNS510 didn't have full postcode so about time.

  9. Only noticed this tonight whilst it was still relatively light .

The dashboard instrument cluster lighting was fading and going brighter again randomly whilst the lights were turned off.

    Is this normal?

Quite normal and how it is designed to work. As the instruments are deep set it automatically adjusts the central instrument cluster brightness according to the ambient light. My past three VW group cars since 2005 have had this feature, as does my current 2013 Superb.

  10. I also had week long test drives in both the Superb and new Octavia before choosing one late last year. Eventually I went for the Superb. I prefer the look of the front headlights and curved LED running lights as opposed to the straight lights design and LED's of the Octavia, plus I much prefer sitting behind the curved Superb dash compared to the straight dash in the Octavia.

My driving is spent mainly on motorways covering up to 45k/year so motorway cruising, refinement and comfort were high up my priority list. The Octavia with the same engine was revving about 300-400rpm higher at the same motorway speed, however the Octavia had DSG against the manual in the Superb. The Superb also has a bigger fuel tank so longer range, but not by much. I take a relaxed approach to driving and so far my Superb averages just over 60mpg brim to brim checked.

Both were Elegance spec cars, full leather was standard in the Superb, an option in the Octavia, the Columbus again standard in the Superb, optional in the Octavia although the previous generation version in the Superb - I didn't really find the newer Columbus any different to use but it does come with three years map updates.

Newer isn't always better and there are several queries coming up on the Octavia 3 forum with various issues such as cruise control, infotainment system plus a few other gremlins mainly software related. It will of course get sorted eventually but when that will be no one knows, whereas time has sorted Superb issues, so to me a bit like Windows XP vs Windows Vista - wait until it's had the bugs ironed out for me - newer isn't always better.

Having said all that the Octavia is a great car and I can see why for some people that would be the better choice., and I may well have one myself next time around.

  11. Fumy you mention this as I was lucky enough to pick up my brand new Superb Elegance this morning and on the drive home also noticed the exact same thing. Personally I'm not bothered by it as having auto lights I won't use the switch except to use the fog lights.

Maybe that's why there is a lamp in the instrument cluster showing when the lights are on, as on my Passat CC and the wife's Golf the switch is further to the right so there is a lamp in the switch itself to show when the auto lights are on - not always easy to know during the transition from late daylight to early evening  twilight.

Does make you wonder why the switch isn't a bit further to the right though.

  12. Something I noticed was that when in 'Eco' mode and on the overrun the car freewheels, the revs drop to tick over and the message 'Eco' shows on the dash. Surely this is still using fuel as the engine is still ticking over. When in 'Normal' mode the revs don't drop when on the override, so isn't the fuel supply cut off to save fuel, the rotating wheels keeping the engine turning over ?.

This could have an effect why it appears more economical in 'Normal' than 'Eco' mode maybe. Obviously when on a longer perhaps motorway type journey the difference is far less. The dash display also shows the adaptive lights, steering and air con are given less of a helping hand when in 'Eco' mode.

I found the car very sluggish in 'Eco' mode, often requiring a firm push on the accelerator, again maybe using more fuel than when in 'Normal' mode with quicker throttle response. If the cruise was re-activated in 'Eco' mode it took a while to get back up to the previous speed.

There was little to no difference in economy going by the dash display mpg readout, showing about 62mpg whether in 'Eco' or 'Normal' mode. I tried 'Sport' but it kept the revs too high for my relaxed driving style.

  13. I've had an Octavia Elegance 1.6 TDI DSG on test for five days now which has the lane assist option. I activated it for the first time today and having never used it before it felt like I had a flat tyre at first, as it felt like I was fighting the system, which I probably was. It uses small but significant steering wheel movements to constantly position the car between the white lines, which would be great on long straight roads but on mildly winding A roads and dual carriageways it's always repositioning the car. I tried to relax and hold the wheel very lightly but it seemed to know this and a warning appeared on the dash asking me to hold the wheel tightly again.

I can only describe it as if someone is sitting besides you and has a hold of the wheel and is trying to move it when you don't want or expect it to move which I found really annoying. Maybe you'd get used to it but personally I didn't like it, although as I said it's my first experience of this technology. I wouldn't spec it as I don't feel it's useful to me, although doubtless others will love it.

Let me add that I currently have a Passat CC 2.0 TDI DSG and was worried about the drop in power, but the DSG suits the 1.6 TDI beautifully and I really like the drive, and have done almost 250 miles today alone, and over 750 in the past five days. A really lovely drive which I am pleasantly surprised at.

Just don't go for the 18 inch wheels as the ride is pretty firm, not sports hard but a little over firm for my liking.

The car is from Skoda UK and is loaded with options bringing the price to just over 29k - ouch.
