Skoda Octavia Mk3 2.0 tdi Blown head gasket
Yeah it's repairable, would guess at £1k+ by dealer, a little less from an indy... Head gasket change requires the removal of a lot of components! Have to factor in cambelt and waterpump, aux belt, gasket set for the head/exhaust manifold/charge cooler/cam cover sealant, new head bolts, fluids and other service items if about due etc... Fully drain the oil and coolant and have a look for contamination with the other then go from there, you can refill with clean fluids to get you to a garage, or tackle yourself if you're that way inclined!

Issues with coding a second key
Smells like BS to me... These ECU's are a funny beast and some coding cannot be changed but as others have said, the key and car were working previously so they have been communicating correctly. At the end of the day the car was driven in, in working order and they have done something to render it unusable, so I'd be pursuing them to rectify it. It's up to them to prove fault, not yours, and driving it in weighs in your favour! The key and immobiliser codes are in the instrument cluster if I'm not mistaken? Surely a new key fob can be coded by an VAG specialist who has the use of ODIS? I would get a second opinion from them.

MIB1 android auto/ car play solution
Yes they do, is it a different display that shows on yours? There's an option in the settings to switch between OEM and aftermarket display. Or does it not switch at all? As for the maps, I'm not too sure as I've not noticed it...

MIB1 android auto/ car play solution
Parking sensors work as intended. As for the steering wheel controls, they still function, volume and track skip for Spotify etc when in android auto, and maxidot controls work fine.

MIB1 android auto/ car play solution
Strange, are you manual or DSG? As I have a reverse camera installed and coded, that might have something to do with it, only thing I can think of? As for the VRS button, it does nothing from the Android Auto screen, you have to exit the interface to return to normal OEM functions. I'm not using the Media button to swap interfaces however as it causes issues with playing the different medias/radio etc as I said a few posts above. If I use the steering wheel control then all works fine! I got it from the link in the YouTube video on the first post, £173 I think i paid. Arrived a lot quicker than was suggested by AliExpress.

MIB1 android auto/ car play solution
I'm not too clued up on the in's and out's of the infotainment combos but as it's just a screen maybe you could swap over to the 8" one? As for the negatives for this unit, it's the loss of my reverse camera that's annoying me... But that's specific to me as it's an aftermarket one anyway and just bad luck the connections are different, not sure about OEM camera connection/cables. Last thing would be regarding the OEM radio/media output. If the radio is playing, then it stops when switching to Android Auto, or it will default to automatically playing from the media library HDD/SD card so then playing something via Android Auto doesn't work... These points are likely down to my lack of experience with the unit however, and I just need play with it a bit more to work it out properly.

Yeah 8" screen with Columbus MIB1 from the factory if I'm not mistaken. Correct, all working ok and returns to Android Auto/Caplay promptly upon exiting reverse. There is a selection in the unit setting to use OEM reverse/PDC display or the unit's own version, either works fine.

MIB1 android auto/ car play solution
Installed and impressed, works well with the larger screen little to no lag present when working through the menus and apps. Only problem is with my reverse camera... Can't connect it to the new MIB loom as has an RCA cable for connection and my camera has a small purple 5 or 6 pin connector. PDC still works fine however.

Burning too much coolant....?
What's your average mileage between top ups? As it's a sealed system, it'll be going somewhere, and that's either natural wastage over time depending on dilution level, or indicative of a leak. High mileage between top up will point towards the first point, or low towards the second but could be a very slow leak still if it's higher mileage between top ups... If it's a leak then it's either mixing with oil or exhaust gas, or leaking around heater matrix and you'll have damp spots in footwells.

Looking good so far, once I've got my car back and the unit installed, then I'll report back how it looks with the bigger screen and reverse camera.

Long term coolant leak but no sign of it externally
This was my issue. Have a read of the various threads, ended up replacing my cylinder head. Dealers were absolutely useless in diagnosing...

ECU replacement
Thanks for your input, seems like that is my best course of action given the situation, hopefully I can source someone local to Nottingham then who's mobile as I can't shift the car for now.

ECU replacement
I have a scan saved thankfully! The ECU place wasn't able to communicate with the unit on the test rig or by soldering in directly, so no cloning or transfer possible, it's effectively a paperweight now. They attempt the EDC17 ECU on a case by case basis as they can't guarantee its repairable, and in my case it's not... I am however inclined to get a second opinion just in case someone somewhere can work some magic on it, even though the place I took it was a state of the art looking, reputable company!

ECU replacement
As title, has anybody had any experience in swapping a dead ECU for a 2nd hand replacement? Car is hatch 2014 VRS TDI with DSG, replacement ECU is from an 2014 Elegance estate 2.0 TDI with DSG. Mine is fried and has been unable to test/repair by an ECU specialist so I'm stuck with needing to replace it. Had a moment of madness on the simplest of tasks, changing the battery, and fumbled the ratchet so the positive terminal connected with the ECU case... I'm aware of needing to get the key/dash/immobiliser info from the car onto the new ECU, and recode it to the build of the car but that's about it, I have access to VCDS but nothing else.

Coolant Loss
The new owner in going to be rather annoyed when they find the issue... Like I was when I purchased mine with your exact problem. Turned out to be a hairline crack in the cylinder head in cylinder no2. Skoda or Indy's couldn't find the issue, even after a head gasket replacement and supposed pressure test, along with egr and charge air cooler replacements by the previous owner... I did a simple sniff test and pressure tested the coolant system when hot and found a slow leak, so I stripped the head out and got a shop to pressure test it individually, I replaced the head with a recon one and the issue magically went away... Bloody hard work though! Quote from Skoda was £4500+ I think to do it for me, I spent around £500 for parts/gaskets/consumables.

Unexplained Coolant loss
There's no valve on or near the header tank? Hmm... I think you'll probably find it still leaking in the near future based on your mechanic. Only electrical valve is the sleeve on the water pump which does fail a lot but wouldn't spit coolant out of the bottle or very close to. Have you noticed coolant pooling under the car or leaking elsewhere except by the tank? Overpressure of the system will vent by the tank cap if it's working correctly so you could have an air lock or some other form of blockage...
-
Unexplained Coolant loss
Only ways you'll have leaking coolant visible there is a bust pipe or cap... Was the cap changed with the new tank? If so then likely it's a small pin hole or hairline fracture of a pipe either side of the tank that only shows when the system is hot. Get a new cap if needed and change the 2 pipes either side of the tank then reassess.

Replied to your PM, good luck!

Limp mode
Had that on my Golf 5, was turbo overboost from a bad map that got gradually worse, eventually the impeller broke loose. Don't let it reach that stage!
