There is a wide junction, 54.992065, -1.563662, which I pass regularly, and being a bus route, I have always left it clear. Now this actually means four or five vehicle lengths of empty road. I also stop to the right of the carriageway since this allows people turning left sufficient space to complete their manoeuvre. Yesterday, however, some complete fwit decided that it was right for him to undertake me at speed and almost hit the vehicle turning across me.
To make up for that, he was at least 50 by the way so not a yoof, a little further up the road a ten year-old cyclist approaching the crossing, so I slow and stop to let him across. A big smile, a wave and a mouthed 'Thank you' It was a shame that another fwit had stopped on the crossing forcing the young cyclist to wobble between bumpers.
Regarding overtaking cyclists, I am one too, I have always treated them as cars, plenty of space in all directions. A friend of mine was flipped by a car overtaking too close and left by the side of the road on the Tyne Bridge. It seems though my example is never followed by those behind. I pull into the opposite lane whereas the next vehicle is within a foot of the cyclist, when there is no reason to be that close. ?Perhaps just scared of crossing the white line?
