  1. Got a meter onto the plugs today. Two reading approx 0.6 / 0.7 ohms and two not changing the meter reading at all, so it stayed at "1" That may explain a few things. Picked up a new set at £7.50 each from ECP in Aberdeen and changed them over tonight. Engine still a bit warm so will see how things go tomorrow morning. Smoke has been significantly better since I put the diesel flush into tank but still much worse than should be. Will let you know how tomorrow goes :peek:
  2. My Mk1 Octavia takes 205/55/16 tyres on 5 stud alloy wheels. I also have a scrap BMW 328 which also has 205/55/16s on 5 stud wheels Do you know if they are likely to be interchangeable or will i just try them on and see? Thinking of using the good BMW ones when the current tyres wear, then keeping a spare set for winter tyres..........
  3. How about front right headlamp washer unit plus plastic trim panel from front end of right side roof rail? Also - what condition is tailgate?
  4. If unsold would you post out the rear headrests?
  5. 3 degrees this morning. Started up with much less smoke today and all i've done so far is put a bottle of Wynns diesel flush in the tank and driven another 150 miles yesterday. Coincidence?
  6. Yes it is pretty mental. Only happens on cold start though. Was using the car today and put around 200 miles on it without issues. Warm starting and general running are fine. Picked up a set of glow plugs to so will try changing them at weekend - I take it there's no mystery in fitting them - just like you would a spark plug, yes? Might also tip in a bottle of engine cleaner to the next tank of fuel. That and change oil and filter. Still don't understand why the glow plug light goes out so quickly - is changing the GPs likely to have any effect on that?
  7. OK so if my car has had a new CTS fitted two years ago and the dashboard glow lamp stays on much longer when CTS disconnected, does that suggest "new" CTS is gubbed too or is something else going on? For sake of £30 for 4 glow plugs I might as well give them a shot. Apologies for daft questions
  8. Meyer or meter? And with disconnecting the coolant temp sensor - apart from coil light coming on on dash what else would that do? I'm guessing the glow plugs would be trying (although possibly failing) to heat? (I've now reconnected it by the way as was out for 30/40 mile trip tonight and all else seems to function fine) From receipts included in sale, car seems to have had new radiator, coolant temp sensor, and head gasket early 2013 since which point its done around 25,000 miles...........
  9. Well that's really cheered me up Still think its the glow plugs? As I said its not smokey at all when warmed up, just during cold start. Power seems OK. AAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHH!
  10. Here's a few photos after staring this evening with coolant sensor still disconnected. I let the glow lamp indicator illuminate and go out three times prior to starting engine......... Last pic is after car had been idling for 3 minutes
  11. These ones then...... ) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GLP003-BOSCH-GLOW-PLUG-SKODA-Octavia-1-9-TDI-00-06-1U2-ASV-108bhp-/181460547678?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item2a3fe4385e =D
  12. Ha - checked docs and it looks like mine is ASV***** so thanks again. Will get to the bottom of this yet, as the actress said to the bishop e
  13. Thanks I thought they seemed cheap - will check engine type cheers
  14. Will try to get video or at least some photos up soon. Are these the appropriate glow plugs..... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4X-SKODA-OCTAVIA-1-9-TDi-PD-1998-2004-DIESEL-GLOW-HEATER-PLUGS-/221304608135?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3386c85587 ???
  15. With the sensor disconnected the start us was just the same - heaps of pale grey smoke for a good minute. Not just the odd puff here - its a full on cloud
  16. OK after a bit of research (I have no manual yet) I guess you mean this one, about half way down motor at rear LHS behind air filter and battery etc.... .....in which case yes disconnected as you can see and dashboard glow plug lamp stays on for around 10 seconds or thereabouts. Does that help identify problem? Sorry, despite maintaining most of my cars/bikes for decades, I'm a total novice with diesels
  17. OK thanks for the replies The smoke is a very pale grey colour and smells of, diesel. When ignition switched on, when engine cold, all the dash lights come up but I notice the glow plug light goes out after about half a second whilst all the other lights are on for 2/3 seconds or so before going out. I was under impression the glow plug light would stay on until motor ready to be started, but this is from memory of occasional diesel truck at work many years ago. So what am I looking for with glow plugs - taking apart and cleaning, replacement?
  18. Hi - my recently purchased 1.9TDI produces a HELL OF A LOT of smoke after cold start, which clears after around a minute. It really is bad. Warm starts are no problem and otherwise the car seems to run fine. Has 140k miles on clock. I'm new to diesels so what sort of aults should i be looking for? Any advice appreciated.
  19. Morning all - well I've taken the plunge and bought a 2002 Octavia Estate. Be prepared for several daft maintenance questions! I've had a quick trawl around here and already found some useful info.......cheers Iain
