  1. I usually do that early on when I get a new (to me) car and I have been meaning to do that for the motorbike as well. Two of my vehicles have analogue instruments and two have digital and the two digital one ie the Mk 4 Clio and the Tracer, are not particularly more accurate than the Octy and the old Scenic I reckon which is odd. Manufacturers seem to deliberately make car/bike speedos over read by about 5% on average I usually find. This may mean the odometer mile reading is also over reading so we service our cars earlier the scoundrels. I am convinced Japanese, and maybe Italian, motorcycle manufacturers deliberately went even higher on speedo inaccuracy to promote sales but that is a bit conspiracy theory thinking ie Smiths Instruments versus Nippon and Valeo ! Stay safe, calibrate and try not be be tempted to exceed the margins. Speed awareness courses and boring and expensive and speeding fines can be mega costly !
  2. What speed in a particular UK counties does one get nicked ? Auto express used Freedom of information, apparently to find out what UK counties set their speed camera at, some declined but most coughed up......... (10% +2 mph seems to be the default) https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-news/106674/uk-speed-camera-tolerances-revealed-is-your-cars-speedo-accurate Speed camera thresholds across the UK Police force Number of cameras Camera activation threshold Avon and Somerset 41 10% + 2mph Bedfordshire 38 Would not reveal threshold Cambridgeshire 32 Would not reveal threshold Cheshire 15 10% + 2mph Cleveland 4 10% + 2mph Derbyshire 18 10% + 2mph Devon and Cornwall 98 10% + 2mph Durham 0 fixed 10% + 2mph Essex 63 Don't use a standard threshold Greater Manchester 235 Would not reveal threshold Gwent 21 10% + 2mph Hampshire 36 10% + 2mph Hertfordshire 53 Would not reveal threshold Kent 109 10% + 2mph Lancashire 34 10% + 3mph Leicestershire 30 10% + 2mph Merseyside 18 10% + 2mph Metropolitan Police/TfL 805 10% + 3mph Norfolk 26 10% + 2mph North Wales 28 10% + 2mph Northumbria 55 10% + 2mph Nottinghamshire 48 Refused to confirm if threshold exists Police Service of Northern Ireland 12 10% + 2mph Scotland 173 Refused to confirm if threshold exists South Wales 137 10% + 2mph South Yorkshire 25 10% + 2mph Staffordshire 286 Would not reveal threshold Suffolk 4 10% + 2mph Thames Valley 294 10% + 2mph Warwickshire 28 10% + 2mph West Mercia 23 10% + 2mph West Midlands 33 Would not reveal threshold West Yorkshire 402 10% + 2mph Can you trust your car speedo? In addition to asking police how strictly their speed cameras enforce limits, we investigated how accurate the speedometers on 10 cars were. We did this by comparing how fast they said we were going with our actual speed, revealed by a VBox meter. Car speedometers are not allowed to ‘under-read’ – they can’t tell you you’re going more slowly than you really are – but they are allowed to over-read by up to 10 per cent plus 6.25mph. So they could read 50.25mph at 40mph.
  3. Well most of the good engineers live around here ie mostly in the Midlands/South of England. Not sure it is to do with the UK's very low corporate tax rate or if they even make a profit but the prize money and bonuses are staggering and Ferrari got more than Merc despite not winning the titles ! https://www.sportekz.com/f1/formula-one-prize-money/ Formula One... Prize Money & Bonus (Revealed) Racing Teams Column 1 Column 2 Bonus & Others Total Ferrari $35 Million $56 Million $114 million $ 205 Million Mercedes $35 Million $66 Million $76 million $177 million McLaren $35 Million $46 Million $71 million $152 million Red Bull Racing $35 Million $32 Million $33 million $100 million Renault $35 Million $38 Million N/A $73 million Haas $35 Million $35 Million N/A $70 million Williams $35 Million $15 Million N/A $60 million Racing Point $35 Million $24 Million N/A $59 million Sauber $35 Million $21 Million N/A $56 million Toro Rosso $35 Million $17 Million N/A $52 million In the above table first column represent the equal merit. Which means all teams received a fixed amount of prize money ($35 million). The 2nd column is about how F1 teams finished on points table. The prize money paid to all F1 teams according to their drivers position on formula 1 table and constructors position. Sponsorship more than doubles some of these figures.
  4. I just love that the group makes British cars we in the UK can be proud of unlike Mercs which have tended to leave me cold and we sometime move McLarens all over the world and it stirs the heart, same for Aston Martin Lagonda cars and I am sad that AML have started to use Merc engines, same with Morgan using BMW engines, a sad day but understandable in these times. Hopefully the move to full EV will change that. Ferrari to bring forward the new mods to Austria mk 2 race, hopefully another exiting weekend of racing.
  5. My 1.4 TSI is the 150 hp model, 0-60 in about 7.5 seconds so quite quick, quicker than the diesel VRSs for example. Top speed over 140 mph on the speedometer. Owners of these newer high tech cars should get an extended warranty as the auto gearbox and the turbo can cost heaps to fix so £20 a month or so is good piece of mind to cover those parts after the 3 year manufacturers guarantee runs out. I tend to do longer trips and 55 mpg is obtainable even at the NSLs. Only the fact that VW/Skoda reduced the fuel tank size from 55 to 50 litres in the Mk 3 Octy from the Mark 2, and it is very hard to squeeze more in to the expansion volume, is about the only thing that annoys me but 600 mile range is possible. I fitted the tail fiin on to mine and it looks good in black when clean I think. Insignia is truly a lump of lard in standard trim, not driven a VXR version which might be fun but even the standard one seem to crap one fuel so a VXR would be bad I suspect, they seem to weigh about 200 kg more than they should. Superb is just too big for car parks etc and is slower with the same economic engines in and Octy has all the sapce I have every needed even in hatchback form but if had a dog again would go for the estate of course.
  6. Octavia has my vote. Cops like them and sometimes buy for their own use. Massive boot, basically Golf quality at lower prices. I love the 1.4 tsi particularly in dsg form. Done about half a million miles mainly in Octys. Just a better value version and practical and mondeo sized for focus money IMO.
  7. Lando doing the fastest lap of the Austrian GP was exactly the same time as Max did last year to get the fastest lap award ie 1.07 475. Max did it on lap 60 where as Lando, of course, did it on the last lap which he has to do to beat Lewis and get on the podium. What would be very interesting for me to know was how much fuel Lando had left after all those safety car instances, I suspect he had quite a few kilograms left. F1 cars lap time is clearly so dependent on all up weight and it would be an interesting to know the weights cars finish the race at so we can compare that to qualifying weights. I think using all of one's full charged KERS for that banzai lap is also key. Lando earning that extra point makes the table a bit sweeter for the Brit in a British car albeit with a French engine. 8. McLaren-Renault fastest race lap of the Austrian GP, bring on next weekend. Extra point too ! Might need to pickup from Sky or Google Norris fastest lap as F1 or Sky are blocking some content.
  9. Bliss. New to me Ultra HD F1 and paying less than I was with the Sky Plus HD box. £299 58 inch 4K TV from Argos, HDR 10+, great this things get cheaper and cheaper. And Renaults doing well so far, happy days,. MotoGP back mid month and WSB end of month to complete the motor racing joy.
  10. Just a slip up forgetting ye olde Imperial system rather than System Internaional units being pervasive.
  11. 135 kph might be its true top speed as I was playing with a new ZE50 in my Dacia TCE 90 and mid 80s seem to be it top wack and it was not great at climbing hills with all that weight. Still my EV of choice at present but more at home on the A roads and city streets.
  12. Some Welsh Gene's in there ? Worried if a go in to the show room I will come out with one. Crazy thing is companies should be asking employees to swap their heavily taxed car allowance for a tax free EV company car. Could probably have a model 3 long range that way !
  13. How tall are you then ? At 6 foot 1 inch ie 1.85,m I hope I am not too tall. Clio and Scenic are OK for me. Buttons are on the small side which annoys me and in odd positions compared to VAG I find.
  14. Renault Zoe for me........ https://www.renaultretail.co.uk/new-renault-cars/renault-zoe/ What makes ZOE so special? Driving Range (WLTP*)Up to 245 miles Free Home Charging**9-10 hours Quick Charging†30 mins Charge your ZOE anywhereOver 9000 public Locations Max Speed135 mph
  15. Changli would not be allowed in Europe as no ABS I presume ? No front brakes also, I thought 60% of braking is needed on the front as this is where one has most the available braking due to weight transfer. For that reason I am out. Electric Tuk Tuk though, cool.
  16. Got my 03 plate 1.6 16v scenic to do the same. Good car for the runs to the tip. Hope it happens and one can match scrappage with improved EV grant, happy days.
  17. Which cars could come in to the sub £30k bracket if the EV grant is doubled from £3k to £6k ? To me it is more about paying not much more than £400 pm on PCP for a 15k miles per year lease. Lower running cost would be a factor but less so than some might think when one has a fuel card so on part of the cost is BIK'd.
  18. Hope it is true. What to buy though ? 64 kWh LEAF 52 kWh Zoe e-corsa Model 3 std + ????? Need to science the **** out of it. Will all EVs get the full 6k or only up to the VAT amount I suspect so UK does not actually lose revenue but therefore PCPs might be awesome.
  19. Sub 200 km range at fast highway speed not too great.
  20. Ionic constantly surprises on its efficiency which offsets its smaller battery !
